Chapter 2: Chapter 2- Please Reconsider

Lady Lillian's benefactor paced in front of her as she sat on the couch in the sitting room. His dark near black eyes and blond hair labeled him as a witch and his wrinkles showed his age. She had lived with him a long time now as he adopted her after her parents died when she was a child. She never viewed him as a father figure though as he never treated her as his child. More like one of his experiments to occasionally view.

He looked outside and let out a huff. The only time she saw her benefactor so angry was when the humans came to burn the old manor down with his research. Some humans simply didn't understand that they weren't evil creatures.

"Who is he?" He asked with an edge to his voice.

She dropped her head as she spoke quietly, "I don't know. He stopped the carriage when I came back from the city. He hasn't spoken to me yet."

"And you are sure he's a werewolf?"

"Yes. No doubt in my mind," she replied straightforwardly.

He thought for a moment before continuing his questioning,  "can you tell which clan?"

"No. Nothing special about him actually," she replied thinking about the werewolf she just met. No distinct marks or jewelry on him.

Her benefactor thought about what the limited information could tell them, "he is probably a rogue wolf then hoping to form a pack. I want you in the house till the threat has been taken care of," he ordered before leaving in a huff.

Two sad, young, dark eyes looked into the room looking to make sure the coast was clear. Her younger brother, Roy, came over to her with tears in his eyes. He hated when anyone raised their voice. She laughed a little and brought the young boy up on the couch with her.

"Come now, don't spill those tears. Your nose will be all runny," she said as she wiped his red face with my handkerchief.

"I-I'm not crying," he stuttered.

"Of course not. You don't cry just because Lord Culpepper raised his voice a little," she said as she had him blow his nose.

"But why was he so upset?" He asked between sniffles.

"Well, he's a bit concerned as there was an uninvited guest. You know he doesn't like to be left uniformed about things," she replied.

It wasn't a lie exactly. The werewolf was an uninvited guest on the manor's grounds. There was no need to worry Roy about things that would be taken care of. He could work himself up into a tizzy rather quickly.

"How about we play a game of chess to take your mind off of things?" She asked and laughed as he wrinkled his nose before heading off to play somewhere.

After Roy ran off, she sighed and looked out the window. Would she ever be able to go out again without being harassed?

~~~
A few days later a new suitor came to the manor. After being stuck inside all week, she wasn't in the mood to socialize with some bland man of high society. She was dressed in her elegant blue evening gown to meet him as per her benefactor suggested. Her waist was slimmed due to her corset and of course Roy was by her side looking up at her dressed so elegantly.
"Are you going to marry a prince and become a princess? You look pretty enough to be one," he said with sparkles in his dark eyes. His fascination with princess and knights was growing a bit out of control.
"No. Princes and princesses are in stories," she smiled as she tried to gently crush his dreams.
He was reading too many of those fantasy stories for his own good. His poor little heart would be crushed when reality set in. Especially when it was his time to marry. A prince coming out of nowhere to whisk a woman away was only in stories.
"Stay outside and be a good boy," Lillian said softly to him and ushered him away from the sitting room where Lord Culpepper and her suitor were waiting.
She knocked on the door frame before she entered the room. There sat the beastly werewolf in his human form with his golden eyes and dark gray hair. He wore a fancy light gray suit making him look like a high standing baron. Her benefactor sat across from him with a satisfied smile on his face like this man would be the one she would agree to marry with no reservations at all. Her blood ran hot as she stared at the two of them there. She bit her tongue to keep from growling at him.
Was it not bad enough that he almost killed her in the carriage and made her horse buck and then held her close to his body! Now he was here looking for her hand in marriage?! Insult to great injury.
"Lord Culpepper, may I speak with you a moment?" She asked as she gestured towards the door.
They step out into an adjacent room where she let her fangs show and her claws extend in anger.
"It took a bit to find him but he seems to be a suitable candidate," he said confidently.
"I didn't mean for you to find him! Culpepper, I wanted him gone!" She growled as she dropped his title.
The man didn't deserve his title as a lord if he wasn't going to protect her from wild beasts. And he had the nerve to think about marrying her to this rogue. He tried to kill her twice!
"He has a good reputation among the nobility and he has land holdings with money…" he began listing off.
"I will not marry that man!" She yelled at him.
"Please be reasonable, Lillian. He is a werewolf. You are a werewolf. He can provide for you far better than I could. At least think about the benefits this relationship has to offer to you," Lord Culpepper argued with her trying to make her see reason.
"Never! Hell will freeze before I accept that beast's proposal!" her voice echoed down the hall just loud enough for the whole household to hear.
----
He sat waiting in the sitting room for them to return. His heart broke once again as he heard her words. They cut through him like a knife. Why did she have so much hate for him?
He saw her with the child and the smile she gave the young boy. It looked absolutely beautiful, she looked absolutely beautiful. Was the reason she refused him was because of the child? Did she believe he wouldn't accept her child as his own? There were stories of men killing children to have the woman for themselves but that was beyond unthinkable. He would take care of her and her child if she would give him a chance.
His thoughts stopped as she appeared in the doorway again. Even though she was angry, she still looked so beautiful.
