Chapter 22: No Time For Love (1)
Time seemed to have flewn swiftly and it was now preliminary examination week. This means that after this, we will have a short Christmas break. I had a full 18 units that semester and it really sucks when each subject requires a take home activity, adding to those some group homeworks and rehearsals, and researches. I will then whisper to myself, "No Time For Love" which actually became my motto ever since I started college . I found out this time that I can be as deadly serious with my studies upto the point of despising my love life. Maybe this is the best way to go, just dig myself to my studies and ignore my heart...Atleast, it is reasonable as long as I don't entertain any of those so called "admirers" whoever they are.
I was organizing my compilations one evening when I heard the voice of my cousin Leandro and some other guys with him coming up. One sounded like Lester and one sounded like Henry. They became glassmates ever since I broke up with Lester. Apparently, after school, Leandro and Henry would go and check Lester to console him of his heartbreak and they would talk on and on over hard liquors.
They talked a bit louder than usual and I heard them sit in the reserved empty bed at the living room. I suspected that they were drunk. I cannot lock my room because I was waiting for Niel to come back. He was one of the officers in the Reserved Cadets Training and they often do the training as an extra-curricular activity so he often comes home late.
For some reason, Henry appeared beside me with a wide grin on his already red face. His hands were inside his pocket and he was bending to look at me. I tilted my head upward to meet his annoying face without any expression in mine.
"What brought you here? Don't you know how to knock a door?" I said.
"Oppssss, sorry, sorry. Where are my manners? I think I'm a bit drunk." He said as he bowed his said shyly.
"Don't you have exams coming up? Or you are already celebrating?" I said sternly. Henry and Leandro were classmates. I was one year ahead of them but they were older than me for two years. They were both taking up Geodetic Engineering. Lester on the other hand is from the western province sent by a company to man the building construction project near my boarding house. He is a civil engineer. No wonder they go along together. They have a lot of common topics to talk about.
"That's just a preliminary exam, why take it seriously!" He said while swaying unsteadily. So, no wonder he is still in his second year at his age because he doesn't take his studies seriously.
"If you are not serious with your studies, please dont come and disturb here. Go somewhere else! Who told you to come here?" I said leaning my back on my chair to relax a bit. I called out my cousin, "Leandro, why did you bring this idiot here? You also should be studying, right?"
"Henry! Don't distract that genuis!" Leandro called out.
"Yeah, right genius! But don't you think genius people don't need to study?" Henry bent his waist so he could put both his elbows on the table while his hands supported his head. "Fem, I'm actually having a crush on you for quite long! " He winked his eyes a few times while curving his lips upward. I hated his shamelessness and fresh manners.
"What? Did you know that I hear a lot of people say that everyday?" I said with an eye brow raised.
"I know, I just wanted to let you know atleast. When you broke up with Lester not long ago, I was about to rejoice. But how can I measure up to that good man? He still loves you though." Henry said, not sure if he was confessing his feelings to me or currying a favor for his friend.
"So what are you saying, stop going around the bush, I'm busy and I dont have time for those heart ache matters!" I said calmly looking directly at his eyes.
"No, nothing. Its all that...nothing more. But we hope you can still consider things between you and Lester." He said then straightened to move out.
Not long after, Niel arrived with a letter in his hand. He placed it in front of me then put down his books. "Letter for you! I got it from the post office just now" he simply said then went back probably to his favorite place - the kitchen.
