Chapter 38: Rival Brothers
I was driving happily back to the city. My brother sat in the front passenger seat while the other three at the back.
My mind kept on playing the conversations we had earlier. I sneered and touched my nose when I remembered my brother's gaze when he insinuated his intention to compete with me. I glanced at him as I sneered. He was silent and his focus was in the rugged road.
"Bro, you aren't serious, are you?" I asked.
"I am" He said blankly.
"About my Fem, why do you joke with those elders about competing with me? " I was not worried at all.
"Who said I was joking?" He said in a half serious tone.
"Bro, I'm not comfortable with that joke. Stop it!" I said seriously.
"Mark, let me tell you, until you have tied the knot, you cannot say she is yours yet. Everyone has his fair chance to woo her, that includes this dear brother of yours. Besides, I'm more in a position to marry her, being a businessman, who can handle the situation better? " He smirked as he turned to look at me.
"Bro! Of all other girls, why do you choose to pick my woman? I don't understand your reasoning at all! What are you?" I raised my voice as I gripped the steering wheel.
"Your woman? But Mr. Law was clear. We are three maybe four, or more!" He chuckled.
"Ha! Are you just trying to annoy me? That won't work bro. You better think of something more profitable. You have so much time to think nonsense!" I said almost muttering.
" So the development should start as soon as possible. The ownership of the land and business will be fixed after marriage. That would give us just enough to finish all the planned development projects. Meanwhile, you two have enough time to settle your own problems with her. Just make sure she won't get hurt." The elder lawyer spoke from behind.
"I have nothing to settle with someone!" I said as I swerved the steering wheel on a curve angrily.
"Hahaha! Bro!" My brother suddenly erupted in laughter. It made me more annoyed.
"Try to do that and we'll see what happens!" I was being pushed at my wit's end.
"Dan, how long will the current construction in the North take place? It seems it's almost complete, looking at it from the outside of the house" I remembered seeing the almost finished big house near my love's boarding house.
"Yup, just finishing touches in the inside. The workers have been withdrawn already but there are few left there. " Dan said was silent but was always alert.
"Are you considering to assign them for this next project? Can you recommend them for this?" I asked Dan.
"Surely, they are the most reliable and hard working group. I'll definitely recommend them there." Dan said.
When we were having a casual talks with the Laws, we mentioned that we will be starting the plan as soon as possible. They will in turn be responsible to notify the village heads to make some advertisement schemes to promote hiking and camping on that mountain.
Along the conversation after lunch though, Mr. Law caught me aside and almost silently gave me a nod to pursue his daughter. I was so pleased that I smiled victoriously and nodded as a I whispered a sincere 'Thank you' to him. The rest didn't notice this since they were busy discussing about the initial plan.
Apparently, Mr. Law didn't want his cousin, Douglas, to get the impression that he was favoring me over his cousin's son. Neither did my brother hear about it.
Truth be told, I knew that my brother just wanted to annoy me over this issue. His pretending to be my rival was just to make impression to the Laws that whoever their daughter will marry, she will end up marrying to the same family just the same. I quite enjoy and am grateful for my brother's all out support. Though I worry that sometimes he forgets about himself. Only, when he wants to piss someone, he will do it like seriously and you'll never know he is just playing fool unless you knew his character from inside out.
