Chapter 20: The Strange Dream

Two weeks after my 'test drive', I got hold of a letter from my dear girl. I have anxiously expected this having been confident that I entrusted my letter to a reliable woman back there in the Northern Province. I have just come from an investigation assignment regarding the drug links and the handlers. It was rather a challenging task since we are dealing with big time syndicates and which infiltrated different institutions even in the justice system. This assignment has proven to be the most difficult task in the entire Police Intelligence history. Many police encounters have lead to wasted lives of good and faithful men in the police force, my father being one of them. Some believe he was set up for the encounter so the hindrance will be wiped out. Hence, my father was hailed as a hero. He was the one who bravely exposed the underground activities of some politicians and judges in the city. Apparently, those distinguished supposed to be public servants were protecting drug syndicates but were so discreet that ordinary investigation could not expose their schemes. The only good thing about the politics in this city and sorrounding provinces was that they didn't threaten each other's lives. Peace and safety is always the top notch pride of this city. However, there are still scoundrels who always want to test the depth of the water.

It was Friday night and I was now finally home. I hanged my car key in its usual place above the letter compartment then checked the letters. I picked those that were addressed to me then headed to my room upstairs. I was feeling exhausted physically and mentally after more than a week of non-stop thinking and working. I placed down the letters on my bedside table, quickly went to shower then went down to have dinner alone. My grandparents attended a birthday party of one of my Grandpa's comrades. The housekeeper usually does her chores than leaves the rest for us to help ourselves as instructed by my grandpa so as not to spoil us.

After dinner and cleaning the dishes myself, I went back to my bedroom, sat at the bedside resting my head on the headboard with a pillow. I closed my eyes and heaved a heavy sigh of tiredness. I wanted to rest my tired eyes for a bit.

When I opened my eyes, I found myself still propped up. The timer beside me indicated that it was Saturday, five o'clock in the morning. I switched off the bedside lamp which was kept on all night then straightened myself on the bed to continue sleeping. Its my rest day after all.

I seldom have dreams when asleep and when I do, I am sure I would witness it happen sometime sooner or later.

.....

I was holding a baby girl in my arm confused what to do. I was torn between keeping her and finding her mother. Then from behind, a medium tall slender young woman came carrying a bag of baby's stuff and milk bottles. I was all the more confused what she was trying to do. Its obvious that she was the baby's mother. She looked cold and unaffected by the baby in my arm. She shoved the stuff in my empty arm then acted to turn away.

"Where are you going?" I blocked her way by my rightfoot.

"The child is yours, but I cant live with you!" she said with stern expression.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked angrily.

"Because I have a dream and you are blocking my way. So keep the child and make sure not to ruin my career." she said with her back against me. She proceeded to rush away from my sight not turning her head until she disappeared. I looked down at the baby in my arms then started to worry what to do with her.

"Baby, lets go home." I said as I kissed the innocent angel in my arm.

.....

I was awakened by a roaring voice outside my door. My grandpa's voice was always as loud as a commander even at 70.

"Mark, don't sleep too late! Are you asleep yet?" Grandma knocked on my door.

I realized that I just had a strange dream. Why was it not related to work, or something about lovelife? I scratched my head then got up to open the door for my grandma.

"Grammie, good morning! You disturbed ny dream!" I said still scratching my head.

"You should go down for breakfast now! I worry you might be sick." Grandma looked at my face as if to check if I was sick.

"And by the way, have you checked the letters already? There seems to be one from your girlfriend." Grandma reminded me of the unopened letters on my bedside table.

"Oh yeah, I will come down in a bit. I'll check it first." I said as I closed the door to freshen up.
