
In the morning, Zhang Zian opened his eyes and glanced around the bedroom as usual. The elfins were sleeping. He turned over and had planned to get more sleep. It was early, and dark and cold outside. A strong wind was blowing. 
But after lying for a while, he fully woke up. Something was wrong. After careful thinking, it seemed that Pi was missing.　
He sat up in bed, and searched carefully with the night lamp of Famous. The chair given to Pi as a temporary bed was empty. Pi was gone.
Did it go to the bathroom?　　
Zhang Zian turned his head, but didn't see any light beneath the bathroom door. So it was not in the bathroom. He hit his head. Pi was an imaginative elfin, why would it need a bathroom? He must have been confused after sleeping.　 
Tap, Tap, Tap!　　
A slight keyboard tapping sound came from the living room. Zhang Zian put on a jacket, passed by the sleeping and kicking Famous, walked over quietly, and saw the back of Pi.　　
It sat on the floor in front of the coffee table. The light from the laptop screen drew out its fuzzy shape. The nameless book was next to the laptop.　　
Pi was short. It was not comfortable after using the computer on the couch for a long time, so it crossed its legs and sat on the floor. Luckily, there was a carpet near the coffee table and the floor was not too cold.　　
A new Word document was created on the computer, with lines and lines of numbers. Needless to say, it was good old Pi. Mixed in with the numbers were some meaningless English letters. Maybe it was practicing how to type. 　 
The pince-nez was clipped on its nose, and the light from the screen was reflected on the thin lenses. Looking from one side, the lenses seemed to be without power, as there were no circles of the prescription lenses.　　
Pi was a slow typist. Sometimes it couldn't remember the location of a certain key, and its finger stayed above the keyboard for a long time. Even so, it didn't use two fingers to make the typing easier. In order not to disturb the elfins' sleep, Pi was gentle in every movement on purpose.　　


After hearing Zhang Zian's footsteps, it turned its head and grinned at him silently.　　
Zhang Zian pointed at the desk, then picked up the laptop and put it on the desk. He then adjusted the chair to the maximum height, and added a cushion. He asked Pi to sit in the swivel chair, then took another chair next to it for himself.　
The height was perfect. Pi was sitting in it comfortably. It pointed at the screen to show something to Zhang Zian. It typed in English: "I want to learn Chinese."　　
This line of English words were typed among a string of numbers. Yet compared to the time at the library, the numbers were much fewer. Although it was still awkward to read, it was less tiresome for the eyes.　　
Learning Chinese?　　
Zhang Zian stopped for a moment, extended his arms, and replied by typing in English: "Why?"　　
Pi clearly wanted to learn to type in Chinese.  It was much harder than speaking and reading Chinese. For a westerner, switching from an alphabetical Indo-European language to a pictograph Sino-Tibetan language was extremely difficult to do.　 
Pi typed on the screen: "Because Chinese is everywhere."　　
It pointed to the functional buttons in Word, then at the variety of books on the desk. Both the words on the buttons and on the book ridges were Chinese, with very few in English.　　
If Pi wanted to live a long time in the pet shop, or in China, it would be very difficult and inconvenient if it didn't know Chinese at all.　　
Zhang Zian nodded and typed: "I get it. How do you plan to learn? Can you learn from your book?"　　
Pi shook its head and typed: "There is no Chinese in the book."　
Zhang Zian thought the book contained everything in the world. He was surprised to find out about this.　
Pi noticed Zhang Zian's confusion, then typed: "The book is full of knowledge."　
All right. He finally knew something about this book. It was a book about life, universe and everything. But maybe it was written in English without any Chinese. So Pi couldn't use it as a textbook for Chinese. 

Zhang Zian thought about it and typed: "You don't know Chinese, but you can understand me talking?"　　
Pi responded: "I know Pinyin. I can hear."　
What the heck? The book had Pinyin but no Chinese characters?　　
Zhang Zian encouraged it: "If you know Pinyin, it will be fast to learn Chinese. I can help you."　　
Pi cheered up and typed: "Thank you. The book taught about how to learn Chinese fast."　　
Next, Zhang Zian found a lot of free Chinese lessons online, and asked Pi to study with the videos.　
Pi was very focused when studying. It could stare at the screen and sit in front of the computer for hours, while referring to the nameless book with the videos. Zhang Zian had to remind it to get up and move around. Only then it would stand up.　 
After the pet shop business, Zhang Zian played hide-and-seek with Galaxy, finished the daily training with Zhan Tian and Famous in the green field, and spent most of the remaining time with Pi, offering help. For instance, choosing an easy-to-use Chinese input software for it was how he helped. 　 
Maybe because it knew Pinyin already, or the learning methods in the nameless book were very effective, or the Chinese input software was intelligent, that a sentence could be accurately entered by typing the first letter of each word. Or maybe it was because Pi was an elfin born of Strength of Faith. It was impossible to predict it with common sense. Anyway, Pi was learning Chinese extremely fast and progressing at a miraculous speed. It was able to type some simple Chinese sentences within a day. By the second day, it was able to express itself in Chinese, although there were numbers and wrong characters mixed in the sentences, and some grammatical errors that would make people laugh. But it was making solid progress. 
The grammatical issues were hard to solve, as the Chinese grammar was too complicated. When the same word was placed in different places within a sentence, the meaning of the entire sentence could be completely different. Also, identical sentences could have completely different meanings depending on the context. 　 
Zhang Zian found some old newspapers for Pi and asked it to type out the news from them. The newspaper wording was very formal, clear and coherent. After mastering the written language, it would not be too hard to study the spoken language then.　　

Pi was tireless once it started studying. It could not leave the pet shop, and Zhang Zian was the only person it had contact with. Unfortunately, Zhang Zian often needed to tend to the customers during the day, and could not stay around it all the time.　　
When learning a language, the most important thing was to immerse oneself in the language through the daily conversations and interactions. Unlike the other elfins, Pi could not speak, and nobody else was able to communicate with it except Zhang Zian. Pi's progress in learning Chinese soon hit a bottleneck. For the same reason, Pi felt lonely, and often appeared low-spirited.　 
Zhang Zian noticed the same. But he couldn't duplicate himself. He had to handle the customers as well the elfins, which didn't leave him much time with Pi.　
He wanted to find a way to make Pi less lonely.

Five and Harriet swiftly went back to the tunnel after the players left. The harpy queen was clearly annoyed. She easily spotted the lustful looks on these humans especially the one called Wang Lin.

"You should be more patient, Harriet. You got annoyed just because they came to talk to you?" said Five along the way.

"Hmmp! I don't like the way they looked at me! These idiots! How dare they show their vile desires in front of me! I can behead them with a single hit," answered Harriet.
 
"Oh man, I better be careful around her," said Five to himself. He found Harriet a little bit impulsive but again, she considered humans as weak creatures that could easily be killed. If he was not a dungeon master, he might have received the same treatment.

The two returned to the communal room as it was time for lunch. He had already collected a large amount of DP. Five now had 2200DP.

Harriet happily brought Five to the Harpy's Communal Room. She enjoyed these moments with him since they would then talk freely and Five would tell her about his own world. Having lived a rather sheltered life until she came here, Harriet could only learn about the outside world through books and stories of others.

She enjoyed hearing stories, especially the ones that described places like the sea or the desert. Although she did not like humans, she sometimes wished that she could go to Five's world and experience everything there.

However, this time was different. Five was intently looking at the pseudo-dungeon core that Kroff gave him. He was planning to look at the group of ten that arrived earlier to see their behavior. The pseudo-core had many functions aside from making modifications and one of them was the camera function which allowed Five to look at any area on the first 10 floors.

When he activated this function, a tiny hologram popped up showing the group of players. They were on the fourth floor, exploring to find the stairs. They were easily killed all the Giant Ants coming to stop them. It was to be expected since the players were level 10 while the Giant Ants were only level 8.

Five carefully observed the players. It was clear that the leader was the one named Wang Chong. The rest of the team was made up of 2 rangers, 1 priest, 2 mages, 2 rogues and 2 paladins.

While Five was watching the players, the melee classes engaged a direct battle with 3 Giant Ants. Another Giant Ant was making its way towards the group, but the mages and rangers showered it with projectiles.

At that moment, Harriet came back with two trays of food, "What are you looking at?" asked Harriet.

"Just the adventurers that arrived today. Since they are supposed to revive after their deaths, I thought it would be interesting to look at their fighting style," answered Five as he absentmindedly grabbed the sandwich on his plate.

At the same time, he noticed that more players stepped on the first floor. When he looked at the pseudo-dungeon core, he found that the 10 players already generated 1000 DP after just 30 minutes. It was a very small amount considering that they already killed 900 DP worth of monsters and they were not showing any signs of stopping, continuing to move to the 5th floor.

On the 5th floor,

"These stupid ants! There's so many of them but they are not even worth our time killing them..."

"That's only because of our level. Let's hurry up and check the higher floors. We are only here to scout the place and check if the monsters are just like the programmers said... If they are right, we should stop on the 7th floor where there are mine bats."

"F***ing hell... They should have made it so that we are not forced to go on all these floors to reach the higher ones... Such a waste of time."

While it looked like a waste of time for the players, it was just a feature that helped the dungeon masters get a few more DP for each player especially later into the game where the players would climb more than 50 floors. A considerable amount of time would then be needed, and a significant amount of DP would be generated.

"There is the Ant Queen somewhere on this floor... So be careful to avoid it. I don't want to waste time on this weak boss!" said a player.

"Why didn't the elders come with us?"

"These old men are just lazy! They want us to do all the work while they can stay at the training center and practice their techniques..."

Harriet silently stared at the hologram. She understood that Five would always be serious when it came to dungeons, but she was not pleased since she would no longer have the opportunity to talk about miscellaneous things with him.

From her point of view, these adventurers were really weak and did not understand what Five wanted to observe in them. Time went by in silence and finally, she could no longer hold it in, "So? Now that you are finally in charge of the dungeon's first few floors, what are you planning to change?"

"Huh?" Five raised his head and looked at Harriet. He smiled and said, "I am seriously thinking about completely changing the arrangement of the floors. It would not bother Kroff, right?"

"The arrangement? What is wrong with the actual one? Is it not good for it to be orderly like that?" asked Harriet, to her, the arrangement of the rooms and tunnels would not affect the generation of DP. It was quite a useless move that would only waste DP.

"I just think that the dungeon could benefit from better aesthetics..."

"Aesthetic?" said Harriet to herself. She had a bad feeling when she heard Five's answer. It was clearly a rubbish excuse and for the first time she felt like Five was planning something sinister, but she could not figure out what.

For a moment, she did not know what to answer and so, the two turned their attention back to the hologram. By now, the group of ten has already reached the 6th floor and was smoothly making its way towards the 7th.

On the lower floors, several small groups of players appeared and started to climb their way up. According to the pseudo-dungeon core, 60 players in total have reached entered the dungeon.

Five momentarily shifted the camera to have a look at the other groups before returning on the first 10 players. "They are all Asians, if I am not wrong, they should be Chinese. They look like Wolf and their names all sound Chinese," thought Five. Wolf was one of his partners when he was undergoing training. He vaguely recalled that Wolf told him that most Chinese had distinguishable features but there was no way for him to confirm.

"Anyway, China has one of the largest populations of Asia. It should be safe if I write in Chinese. Besides, many people also started to learn Mandarin," said Five to himself.

Luckily, when he was at university, Five followed a language course since he could use it to replace the grade of another module and coincidentally, the language he chose was Chinese.

Still sitting in front of Harriet, he quickly took out a piece of paper and started to write in Chinese," Fifth Floor Second Corridor..."

As for Harriet, she curiously looked at Five's actions not understanding what he was doing. She could not read Chinese and for her, it looked like he was writing some sort of runes.

After thinking for a brief moment, Five started to modify the writings, adding lines and gaps here and there. He then quickly shaded part of the drawing. Now, the original sentences were barely recognizable. He clearly knew that he could improve what he had drawn but for a first sketch, it was not too bad.

Having finished his tasked, he raised his head and asked, "What do you think? I am thinking of mapping the floor like that. The shaded parts represent the walls or solid areas while the white parts are the rooms and tunnels?"

"The new map? Is it even a map? Why are there long tunnels in this area and why did you cluster so many rooms there? " commented Harriet. To her, it simply looked like a mess but her intuition kept telling her that something was wrong with this map.

"Mmm" Five clearly knew that there was a lot of room for improvement. He needed to find a way to rearrange the floors, "Maybe break the sentences and place the bits on different floors? Or use different words?" thought Five.

"This is aesthetics, Harriet. Just aesthetics"

After being betrayed, framed and kicked down to the ground, our protagonist was sentenced to life imprisonment. But a few days later, a global disaster occurred, people from all nations migrated to underground refuges.

As a prisoner, he thought his life was over, abandoned by everyone. However, he wakes up, greeted by Gaia, the person responsible for New Earth.

New Earth was a second chance for him, watch as he builds up his own dungeon and become known by all as the Emperor of Madness

I went out on the balcony with a glass of wine in my hand. I spent there about an hour starring at the sky like I was looking for some written in the stars answers.
It took me a while before I was able to think straight and get to some reasonable conclusion. Although it wasn't clear if it was my common sense or curiosity speaking… Nevertheless, I figured I should restrain my paranoia, and base only on facts.
First, no one knew that I was doing a research on TK Industries… except for the hacker, who threaten me but only once.
Second, I applied real events and conditions in my story but I changed all the names, and I figured that the probability that someone would match all the facts, and use that against me, was lower than low.
Third, who would care about some nameless, online storywriter? I most likely had better chances of dying from a thunder strike while standing at the balcony of my own apartment than being attacked by Chinese Triad.
After that I peacefully concluded that there was nothing to be scared about. Moreover… those articles could be used as a great base for my novel! Game creators and writers use Yakuza or Triads in their stories all the time, and they were all still alive… or at least I hoped so.
"How about creating my Troy's family background on this… Wang Hiro?" the more I thought about it the more I was excited. More than that, I finally knew what I was going to write in my next chapter.
"Putting a little flashback from Troy's childhood wouldn't hurt, would it?" I couldn't wait to start writing.
Taking precautionary measures, I decided not to be so obvious, and mix the things I knew from articles with my own imagination. The very first step was to build my own character based on Wang Jian.
After reading everything about Chinese names… which gave me a huge headache, I came up with couple of possible names. I was dying to go with a last name Wu but it sounded too similar to Wang…
"If not Wu… maybe Cheng? Cheng… Li?" it sounded pronounceable enough, so I figured that might be a good choice.
"As for Troy's origin name… Cheng Tao…?" I hoped both names were different enough not to match them with the real ones.
Then I started thinking if my Cheng Li and Cheng Tao should be father and son. It sounded a little too simple.
"Maybe grandfather and grandson, or uncle and nephew?" 
Every single one of my ideas was lacking some spark. For me, basing Troy's past on blood ties seemed incredibly boring. Then I remembered when Tom called person he was mourning a "father figure". 
"How about using something like that? What if I make Cheng Tao an adoptive son?" I wondered.
I was using an information from Tom's life, and I felt a little guilty for that. But I quickly made an excuse for myself that he wasn't the only person in the world who was raised, or partially raised by a non-kin.
I could already picture a scene in my head, so I started typing hastily, hoping to capture every word flowing in my mind.
"One day a small boy wondering on the streets accidently ran into a dangerously looking man. That man was notorious and cruel Triad gang-leader, who could easily kill everyone who stood against him. The man looked at the boy with his deadly stare but the boy was not scared of him. The little man raised his head and glared back at the fearsome man. It was obvious to everyone around that the kid is about to die… but unexpectedly, the gang leader laughed. He admired the kid's courage and decided to make him his own son…"
Although, I already knew similar stories from movies and books but still, a part like that could make my male lead more interesting. There was only one problem… my knowledge about mafia, triad, yakuza… I had none.
"Ana! How are you supposed to write a good fiction, without knowing any basic information?!" I scolded myself. Then I went to the kitchen to get myself, a mug of coffee. It was going to be a long night.
I got through some boring, historic details, and name of leaders I forgot in three seconds after reading. It was all the information I found in English…
"Should I find back the Chinese blog, where I read about Wang Jian?"
I knew that, at the same time, it was a good and bad idea. It was a good idea, because it most likely would be my only source of useful knowledge, but it was a bad idea because I would have to translate everything from Chinese again!
The curiosity won again. Unfortunately translating a blog, written with all sorts of idioms and informal phrases became my very own mission impossible. I could easily say that the only words I was sure of was… the name Wang Jian.
I got so frustrated that I wanted to search for help in writers' chatroom.
"Help! Does any of you speaks Chinese???" I started typing but deleted it immediately.
"Are you insane, Ana?! Are you really going to post a text online about Triad?! Not to mention, that it is, most probably, involving a hacker that broke into your computer and threaten you?!"
I broke down, then spent another hour of copying and pasting Chinese blog's paragraphs to multiple translator apps. The results were dreadful. For example names, or nicknames were sometimes translated literally creating all sorts of absurd sentences…
"Dead meat cut the barking tree…? What the hell am I reading?!" I gave up.
It looked like I had to find a native Chinese speaker to translate it for me… and then it hit me.
"Tom! Tom is an Asian, he speaks Chinese… right?"
I couldn't tell where he was coming from, but I thought it might be ok, if I asked him. Although, if he spoke Chinese, there was another problem, and that was to persuade him to help me, and that this dangerous, new hobby of mine was just for the book research, and I was not going to contact any gangsters…
What was left for me to do, was to wait for Tom to return… from wherever he went with a luggage and suit. I only hoped, he won't be gone for long. It was a very selfish wish, it would delay my writing.
"Should I text him?" I wondered impatiently.
After making three hundred circles walking around my apartment, I wrote a short text.
"Will you come back by tomorrow? I need a favor."
"No. 3 days. Wait," Tom answered almost in instant.
"Is he trying to write in codes, or something?! Would he die if he used full sentences like a normal person…?" it really annoyed me. Moreover, he didn't even know what was the favor about. I already could imagine that I ask my question three days later and he says, "I don't speak Chinese."
As much downcast I was, I knew I couldn't do more at that point. I went to bed to get some sleep.
In those three days, I decided to face those Hanzi signs again. I found some parts that were easier to translate, and I became more and more fascinated with Wang Jian's life… or his "legend". I told myself that I was reading it for the sake of my novel but the truth was, I was genuinely enjoying it. Furthermore, in those stories, Wang Jian didn't seem like a villain at all…
Someone, who called himself as Wang Jian's younger brother, wrote that his family was brutally murdered by one of the gangs when he was only seven. He miraculously survived the slaughter and escaped hiding on a transport ship to Taipei. He provided for himself for five years doing all sorts of work at the harbor. As a 12 year old boy, he was illegally hired to work as a busboy at the cruise ship to Yokohama. On one of the cruises, he met a wealthy Japanese family, they decided to raise the boy, and provide him education.
Nobody wrote, what the Japanese family's name was. The only thing I found was that, supposedly, Wang Jian referred to that family's son as his "only Japanese blood brother throughout his life". 
Wang Jian returned to Hong Kong when he was 21. Those who wrote his legends said that he was then well educated and astonishingly strong. It took him only a year to wipe out the gang that murdered his family. Not long later he became the Blood Dragon, the gang leader. 
In every story Wang Jian seemed to be like a Chinese version of Robin Hood, a hero, who fought with corruption, took from the wealthy, and gave to the poor. He was feared, respected, and admired. People around him loved him.
I spent couple of hours sitting and eating snacks while reading all of it. I couldn't tell how much of it was the truth but I didn't really care. It was a fascinating story about good fighting evil. 
The only problem was, there was no information about Wang Hiro, like he didn't exist before showing up as the only heir, right after Wang Jian's death. As for now, this Blood Dragon's son looked like the true villain of the story.
I noticed that there is new post on the blog that I found my first information about Wang Jian. I hoped to find out a little bit more about what recently happened with Liming Corporation, and the one posted on this blog seemed to have a lot of inside information. I needed a human translator… like now!
"Tom was supposed to come back today… should I text him? Should I just wait for him to let me know that he came back?" I wondered impatiently staring at the phone. 
After desperately trying to make the phone ring using my willpower for fifteen minutes, I went down to do some groceries, and cool down.
On my way back I saw Tom going in through his apartment door.
"Tom!" I shouted ecstatically through the hallway.
He stared at me dumbfound. He seemed to be puzzled enough to stop and wait silently for me to run at his door.
"I have a question! Do you speak Chinese? Please tell me you do!" I asked pleading with eyes wide open.
"I come from Japan. You are aware, that China and Japan are not the same country, right?" he inquired mocking.
"I'm not an idiot, Tom. I simply wondered if you speak Chinese… You are an Asian…" I tried explaining a bit timidly.
"Your name is Kowalsky, do you speak Russian?" he continued teasing me.
"No I don't. My Grandpa was Polish, Kowalsky is a Polish name. You are aware, that Russia and Poland are not the same country, right? However, a lot of people in Poland knows Russian. That's why I chose to ask you, if you speak Chinese. Don't taunt me please," I said with an annoyed tone.
"Touché," he laughed admitting defeat, "I do speak Chinese."
I thought I was going to kill him at that point. 
"Does he really love to tease me that much?! Couldn't he simply answer my question, without making me feel embarrassed?!" I was furious inside my head.
"What do you need?" he said with his usual smirk.
I took a couple of deep breaths before I was able speak calmly.
"There's a blog written in Chinese. I need to know what it is about. It's for my novel."
He grinned while looking at my trying-to-stay-calm face.
"I need a shower, but I'm hungry. I'll come to your place in thirty minutes. Make an eatable dinner."
He closed his door leaving me silently clenching my fists. I wanted to kick his door cursing at him… but I chose to have the blog translated, so I lowered my head and walked to prepare some dinner.
It looked like it was going to be another unexpected evening I would spend with Tom…

They murmured a couple of incomprehensible sentences and proceeded to leave.
"Thank you!" The apprentice boy bowed again. On that occasion, he actually spoke in Chinese, but his Chinese pronunciation was far worse than Ibeiya's. After all, not everyone possessed the foreign language talent of Rosa Kingdom.
"I'm here to look for Hammerhead and make an order for spatial equipment, but he seems to be busy? " Xiao Lin hesitated.
