Remian brought back one particularly interesting little booklet from there entitled 'The Black Ruins' Different Magic System'. 
The first line on the first page was enough to convince him of the value of this booklet. It said, "According to the Black Ruins Civilization, the magic that we practice today only accounts for half of their system."
In other words, they used magic completely outside of the current system. It wasn't a matter of different spells; the very system they followed was distinct.
It was followed by a whole three pages of explanation on how expeditions in the Black Ruins have progressed over the world over the past decade or so, and then, how a group had put together their findings from seventeen different ruins, and concluded the following…
'The Black Ruins Civilization believed that there were in the end only two kinds of magic; Law, and Chaos. Law magic refers to all systems of magic that rely on laws; for example, the ever-popular fireball spell taught in the Magic Academy of Ecclesia uses the Laws of Fire and Movement. With a Sigil and an Incantation, and a burst of mana, the Laws of Fire form a shape and that shape is launched forward according to the Laws of Movement. In that sense, all magic taught in the Academy are Law Magics; all of them use Sigils, incantations, and Laws. Many of them even require formations.'
'Law magics are generally reliable in their outcome. As long as the system is followed, the result could easily be predicted with a reasonable margin for error. Chaos magics, however, are entirely different.'
'The results of Chaos Magic are often unpredictable. The reason for that is that they rely on variables, and that very reliance on variables is itself variable. For example, the practice of the forbidden 'soul boost'. The use of emotional resonance to increase the power of one's spells is dangerous, and should never, ever be attempted on pain of disciplinary action according to Section 31.5b of the Civil Security Penal Code, and Paragraph 091 of the Bylaws To Ensure Domestic Safety…'
Five pages of issues pertaining to laws and punishments regarding Soul Boost followed before it returned to the topic of Chaos Magic.
'Most intriguingly, Law Magic appears fully rooted in the natural laws and systems of this world; the environment, energy supply, the Sigil and the Incantation. Chaos Magic, however, seems to involve extradimensional factors; feelings, spirits, and apparently an entirely different space through which energy could be 'imported' into this dimension…'
Five of the members of the group who made the booklet agreed that the Draconian abilities to use Fire Magic that bypassed Sigils and Incantations was an example of Chaos Magic. The other three disagreed saying that Draconian Magic merely followed a different system of Law Magic, one pertaining to bloodline and their bond with dragons. They went on for three more pages to explain and discuss the risks and dangers of attempting to bond with dragons. Then the next five pages described nine different bloodlines with magic affectations, three types of eye mutations that also affected magic, the rumors of a Magic Hand, and the myth of a Magic Foot…
 Then it went completely off topic and into the stories told of each individual author about their own experiences in the ruins and what they so credibly figured out about the Black Ruins Civilization, as pertaining to Law and Chaos Magic.
That completed the booklet. Throughout the entire thing, there wasn't even a single spell or technique offered. Remian almost threw away the booklet in disgust.
"That bad?" Mindy asked, as they piloted the Wasp to the Fifth Checkpoint that day. 
"Not entirely." Remian relented. "Most of it is rubbish, but I did learn a few useful things."
"Such as?"
"Such as the fact that the Black Ruins Civilization used both Law and Chaos Magic." Remian said. "Also, that they used Chaos Magic to acquire energy from another dimension. Like the weapons we got from there, these Runic Nagamaki. Do you remember talking about how we had to manually feed those runes, that they seemed to be designed to be powered by something else? There's no slot or adapter for mana crystals, so…"
"They were supposed to draw power directly from the Chaos Dimension?" Mindy guessed. 
"Or maybe they just had to be plugged in to recharge somewhere." Remian shrugged. "Something like that."
"Actually, when you talked about importing magic from another dimension, something else came to mind." Mindy added, frowning.
"What's that?"
"The Source of Magic. It's a crack in space. You don't think…" Mindy trailed off.
"That maybe the Black Ruins Civilization tried to create an endless source of power and created it?" Remian guessed. "That would mean that the Source of Magic is not the source of magic, merely a man-made channel to the chaos dimension. In which case… where does magic come from? Where does all the mana in our world come from, before the Crack was made?"
"I don't know." Mindy shook her head. "I don't even know if the Source of Magic was made by the Black Ruins Civilization, or whether the Black Ruins Civilization figured out Chaos Magic by studying the Source."
"We might find out the answer, if we keep studying the Ruins. There's more of those in the Wildlands than anywhere else in the world, and they're mostly unexplored because of the Wilds." Remian shifted. "If we could just convince the Wilds to let us through…"
"It's a miracle that we've made as many friends as we have already. I'm not sure how many more Wilds we'd be able to befriend." Mindy sighed. "When is the next Beast Tide arriving?"
Remian shook his head. "I'm not sure. Whenever the death toll of the Wilds reach 10,000, I guess?"
"What's it at now?" Mindy asked.
"I'm not sure. I kind of lost track." Remian confessed.
Mindy closed her eyes for a moment. Then, she said, "It has been 71 days since the last Beast Wave. The current death toll is 6129. Yesterday, it rose by 226."
"Wow! How did you find that out?" Remian asked in amazement. "Is it accurate?"
"That's Doom's count, according to Darian." Mindy told him. "That's the count that is going to spring the Beast Tide when it hits 10,000. I don't know if it's accurate, but that's the count that matters."
"That it is." Remian agreed. "Up by 226 in a day… at the rate we're going, we'll be facing the next Beast Tide in half a month."
Half a month! Remian suddenly felt a chill.
"Are you all right?" Mindy asked, seeing his face pale.
"It's just…" Remian shook his head. "I thought we'd have years, yet. Half a month is…"
"Eighteen days, at the current death rate." Mindy calculated. "That's not good. We better alert George and have them prepare defenses, try to reduce the killing."
"I'll leave you to it, then."

Darian was snacking on Wyvern Berries, a rare fruit that grew up around draconic aura, when Mindy's thoughts reached out to him. [Darian! I need some help!]
[Again…?] Darian half-groaned.
[At the rate things are going, the next Beast Tide is going to happen in eighteen days! Do you want that?] Mindy asked. [We have to reduce the death toll!]
[Great idea. So go do that and let me eat in peace!]
[But we don't know what's causing it! I remember George set strict rules on hunting Wilds. How did the death toll rise to over 200 in a day? That's simply not possible!]
[It's not just hunting that's killing the Wilds. It's all human activity. This includes water pollution, losing their homes and dying without shelter, losing food sources and starving to death, poisoning due to eating human litter… as long as it's related to something a human did, the Wilds count it as a manmade death.]
[Does George know that?]
[Seeing the way the death toll is rising, probably not.]
[Tell him! Tell him, quick, before things get worse!]
Darian groaned. [It's the middle of the week, I'm not supposed to go anywhere until the weekend, and on top of that, George is at Kara-Goth, not Three Pines.]
[But you can do it. Ha'res-dras could probably make the trip there and back within hours. I'm days away even if I rushed back with the Red Fang right now!]

I finally recovered from my vicious, abusive cousin. One day I'll show Mikael who is boss. This young noble will surely get his revenge.
During my recovery, I practiced the [Flint & Steel Art] every day. My devilry had gradually settled at the high-Esquire level. I felt I could give Mikael a good round after breaking through, but dared not go looking for trouble.

I looked it over and saw nothing special about it. It was ancient and tattered, I could tell several pages were missing. They seemed to be forcefully ripped out.
The book was ten and a half inches long, seven and a half inches wide, and an inch and a half thick. A black leather cover bound it. The cover was fresh, in much better condition than the tattered pages.
I flipped through the pages and noticed there was no text on them. I realized my Devil Ancestor had told me this was an inheritance item, so I probably needed to pour some qi into it to get it to work.
I poured my Devil qi but nothing seemed to happen. After no reaction, I poured in my Soul qi.

The Codex sent a detailed map of the Wesser Forest into my head; it showed the general area where I could find Sybil and what to watch out for. The book had also changed in my hands, the cover turning blue and pages new. The Codex no longer looked like an artifact, it now looked like something I could buy in any common shop.
I threw the Codex to the side. This stupid book wanted me to go deep into Wesser Forest! I had no reason to pit my life against such powerful demon beasts.
All that hard training and difficult questing were for common devils! This devil here is a prodigal young noble!

While James was grumbling on his misfortune his Devil Ancestor was hard at work training Mikael. The Devil Ancestor was quite impressed with how Mikael had whipped James into shape.
He thought to foster his growth so James would have someone to keep him focused. Mikael was a Light Dao practitioner with a powerful sense of justice and clan cohesion.
"Sir, here with a batch of sinners who await sentencing. Sir," said Johnson.
Johnson was the Devil Ancestor's right-hand man and General Manager of [Mountain Shadow].
They named [Mountain Shadow] for Johnson's Dao of Darkness and the Devil Ancestor being the 'Mountain Forger'.
The Devil Ancestor was well known for his eccentric ways.
Johnson managed the day-to-day affairs of [Mountain Shadow] and only reported to the Devil Ancestor.
He had been a follower of the Devil Ancestor before the Hudson clan was founded. His loyalty was unquestionable.
The burly devil looked over the docket and then glanced over at the criminals sitting cuffed in bindings.
"Splendid job, Johnson," said Kogthoz.
The burly devil casually waved his hand and all the physical bindings came off. Kogthoz bound their cultivation, then released his Count Aura.
"You all are here because you are criminals with crimes against the Hudson Devil Estate. I have looked over the facts concerning all of your cases. The evidence and testimony against you is clear cut." said Kogthoz.
"Breaking our Clan Laws with no concern of your own flesh and blood, with many of you having far more crimes under your belt that deserve death independently."
"I Count Hudson, Lord of the Wesser Forest and Warden to the Hudson Rift, in the name of the Rez'gal Empire sentence you to die."
The criminals kowtowed and began begging for mercy.
"Please have mercy Devil Ancestor we know our wrongs," They all said in unison.
"I was falsely accused."
"The glove doesn't fit."
"I did not have sexual relations with that woman."

This is the story of a young noble devil within the Xertzul Abyss. Spoiled and dotted on since birth, James is your typical arrogant young master. He bullies and beats anyone he can find with the help of his butler Azon. His good days come to end though when he unlocks a useless Dao and is labeled as trash by his devil clan. With his fall from grace, James has to learn the value of hard work and effort if he ever wants to find his place within the heartless Abyss.

This is a true weak to strong story focusing on an evil protagonist. James has no moral compass and is riddled with character flaws that are fixed by his character development. If you want to skip Volume 1's character progression start reading at chapter 69 it is a full recap that allows you to start reading Volume 2.

This novel has logical character and strength development while the MC is given very little plot armor to help him along his path. In fact, most of the time the plot actively works against the mc.

With the flick of its finger, the creature that claimed to be Rin Maurus, sent a message to every player simultaneously.

I opened the message. A standard disclaimer. Events like this often break the eight hour time restriction placed on the game, put in place to reduce the chance of medical complications.

I read through the first several pages, all standard stuff. I kept scrolling glancing through it. It looked to have no end. The page count read five hundred and seventy-nine pages.

I thought it a bit weird, but considering the circumstances, the grandeur of the event, and everything leading up to it, it made sense. 

I signed with my index finger and pressed accept.

It was called the technology that changed the world. The «Nervous System Synchronization», or «NervSy2nc», [Pronounced, Nerve Sync]. It fundamentally changed how society interacted with the digital world; information, data exchange, and the internet were altered with the release of the NervSy2nc. 

The «NervSy2nc», a device that allowed man to physically feel, and connect their minds to information network through the neuropathic systems. These systems connect each device to the synapses that connect neurons together, and then connect those pathways to the information Highway.
 
This technology brought man into a new age of understanding, and technological advancement.
With the birth of the «NervSy2nc» Most physical mediums - cellphones, computers, and handheld devices - became obsolete. 

Medicine made leaps in bounds in both diagnosis, and treatment of a wide variety of diseases and illnesses.
Though the use of the «NervSy2nc», with enough money advanced Skills, and techniques could be learned in days, directly uploading the skills to the mind. Languages could be processed, and understood near instantaneously. Memories, and vast amounts of data could be stored, retrieved, or removed within minutes. 

Along with the development of the technology came «Quantum Super Computing» and the eventually development of «Virtual Intelligence», programs designed with near life like qualities.

Through development of the «NervSy2nc» and «Quantum Super Computing», special «Virtual Intelligence Programs» called «Per.S.O.N.A», or «PERsonal System Operating Neuropathic Anima/Animus» were created with the intent to assist in information flow and management.

Each «Persona» could be told to restrict, and block incoming harmful junk data, while accessing and sorting potentially helpful data. Each «VI» was designed with a multitude of forms, personalities, and voice data.

In this new digital age of information and data exchange, a new use for this technology emerged, changing the face of gaming forever; the «R.E.M.D.» or «Rapid Eye Movement, Dive System» - often referred to as «Dream Gaming» - came to be. R.E.M. Diving allowed players to place their mind in a virtual body, while their physical body slept, placing oneself in an artificial, vivid, and lucid dream. 

This technology allowed games to reach new heights by directly placing the player into the game, with little to no side side effect. The Development of this technology- «NervSy2nc» and «Dream Gaming» all stemmed from, Rin Maurus.

Rin Maurus in turn continued to take his technology to new heights. He created a single game that linked all genres and styles, while doing what was before an impossibility, linking the entire world through this game and many others. 

He created quantum network servers to link all servers of the world together seamlessly. This created a new virtual world that was much larger than our own, that was traversable from one sever to another without a break in connection. 

Millions upon millions of players worldwide have joined this game, leading to a membership count of over two billion.
In this fictional world anything was possible; Fantasy, Science Fiction, Horror and Social platforms. All became possible; in this world you could do anything or be anyone you wanted.
This is the world built by the genius, Rin Maurus.

Xi Gu's Diary 01
Dear Diary,
This is embarrassing. Hao Ting bought me this diary and suddenly told me to start writing in it. 
Said it's some kind of writing challenge and once I completed this book, we'll seal this diary and the one Hao Ting wrote in a time capsule and then read it again when we are much much older. He doesn't say when but I figured since it's something he is doing as well, then I guess I'll just tag along.
So if Hao Ting you are reading this many years later, I just want to, first and foremost, thank you.
Thank you for being in my life and thank you for making my days count.
I love you so so so so so so so so much.
I don't really say that a lot but I hope I did manage to convey to you how I felt by the way I acted around you. I am the luckiest person for meeting you.
You gave me meaning to life and you gave me a family. I'm so grateful to know what is it like to have a cute little sister and how is it like to joke with a mom and behave awkwardly with a shy dad. Of course, now I am grateful to have a doting partner like you.
Hao Ting, by the time you read this, I wouldn't know what will happen to both of us. My biggest wish will be for us to be reading all these cheesy entries together but if ever, by whatever reasons you are reading this by yourself, I want you to always have faith that I have loved you very much. It's a fact that will never change.
To the future me, if for whatever reason you are reading this by yourself, I want you to always keep Hao Ting as someone who has changed your life in your heart and always believe that he put his best efforts to love you. You owe him that much.
I am sorry I started the entry with such a serious note, it's really not my intention but I felt it's important to write first how important writing the following pages will be for me. The next pages will be details and stories of our lives together. Stories which made our days and this first page serves as a reminder for me, to you reading that, my thoughts and my feelings for Hao Ting will and forever stay true.
That and Hsiao Hao Ting, you better remember how you purposely try to distract me while I am writing this entry because you want to read it. See the messy handwriting? It's Hao Ting's fault.
I think I have to stop here and hid my diary before he finds it and reads it. Time capsule is probably his ploy to sneak read my thoughts but I wouldn't let him succeed.
Hsiao Hao Ting, you invaded my heart and took.
Wouldn't let you do the same with my diary even though you bought.
