"What's going on?" another voice asked. A girl's voice. "Raina," she said. "My name is Raina!"
"Can it, Raina!" Mark's voice resounded in my head. "Jessica Chavez just changed. Bring her a blanket and some clothes."
"What do I look like? A golden retriever?" Raina protested. I could hear her footfalls hitting hard against the forest floor, getting closer.
"Just do it! Now!" Mark countered.
"Son of a...."
"Raina! You remember what it was like when you changed for the first time, now do as I say and get out here!"
"I'll bring the blanket," another girl said.
"Lexie?" She was in my American Lit class. "You're a wolf, too?" I slowed when I came to an open clearing. Night was falling, as the sun began to sink beyond the horizon, sending shoots of red, orange, and lavender across the blue sky.  
"Yeah, for about a month now, actually it's pretty cool," Lexie said, smiling.
"Cool? This is cool? I was literally freaking out. What's happening to me and why are you all wolves? Why are we all wolves?" I asked, exasperated, shaking and pacing, fighting the urge to start running, to escape the horror of this night.
"Jessica, listen to me very carefully," Mark said. Just then a sorrel colored wolf—a deep reddish brown—ran into the clearing, followed by a light brown wolf and a grayish-black wolf. Instinctively, I knew that they were Eric and Micah. "Do you remember the stories of the tribe? We have a close kinship with the bear?"
"What does that have to do with anything?" I mentally shouted.
I could feel Raina roll her eyes. "Drama Queen."
"Raina, kiss my...." Anger flashed through my body, creating the red haze with black around the edges in my vision again.
"Ladies, stop!" Mark ordered. "Focus, Jessica! Listen to my voice and answer the question. Do you remember the stories?"
I sighed, trying to focus, pacing in the clearing. "Yes, I remember."
"Good." Mark paused, giving me time to collect my thoughts. "Now listen carefully. Years ago, people thought that we were bears because of our huge appearance. We actually look like our brother, the bear. From a distance, we were easily confused with them."
"Okay...," I said in disbelief, trying to absorb this.            
"The people were seeing our ancestors in their wolf form long ago and they thought we were bears," Mark continued. "But they knew we were their protectors. We don't tell anyone outside of the pack of our existence, so the connection was never made. It also helps to conceal our identity. Today, even though we try to stay hidden, people still think we are bears when we're seen."
 Suddenly, a gray wolf, Dylan, burst into the clearing, skidding to a halt as bits of dirt and lichen flew into the air. He trotted up to us, giving me a wide berth.
"But that doesn't tell me how we turn into wolves! Why am I a wolf? Someone please help me to understand!" I pleaded, pacing, trying to get used to this new body. "The old stories never said anything about this!"
"Actually, they do. You weren't ever told all of them. We're shape shifters, Jessica," Mark answered, slowly approaching me. "But the only form we can take is that of the wolf."
"Why do we change into wolves and no other form?" I asked, slowly calming down.
Suddenly, a beautiful mahogany wolf slid into the clearing at full speed. Instinctively, I knew it was Dakota. "Sorry I'm late. I was on the north end of the town patrolling when Jessica changed," Dakota said to Mark.
"See anything?" Mark asked.
"No," Dakota answered, shaking his massive head from side to side. There was a flash of something in Dakota's mind, but it was too quick, and I didn't catch it.
Many took a seat on the ground around us, settling in, preparing to listen to the story. Dakota came to stand beside me but didn't get too close. He was respecting the fact that I was new and not in control, but I knew he was there for moral support. I felt better with Dakota by my side. Even though we had just met, I felt that I had known him all my life. Now, I knew why. The kinship of the pack was strong, like family.
"Long ago," Mark began, "our ancestors were having problems with many supernatural beings."
"Supernatural?" I asked.
"Werewolves, vampires, zombies, witches," Mark explained. "Supernatural forces."
"So, we're werewolves." It was more of a statement than a question.
"No, we're shape shifters, Jessica," Mark corrected. "But we call ourselves wolves in this form."
"So, werewolves and vampires really do exist?" I asked, finally calming down, trying to make sense of it all.
The others were relatively quiet, listening to the story. I sensed that they were all here for moral support for me, too, which touched me. Or at least many were here for that reason.
Raina rolled her eyes.
"We exist, don't we?" Mark answered my question with one of his own.
I nodded my silver head. It was going to take me a while to get used to this new body. "But why do we change into wolves?" I asked, still pacing, trying to focus.
"I was getting to that," Mark added. "Our ancestors were having problems with supernatural forces. Desperate, the chief of the tribe, Chief Ute, performed a ceremony asking the Great Spirit for help, along with some of his trusted warriors. They built a bonfire high enough to reach the heavens to attract the attention of the Great Spirit. Chief Ute and his warriors chanted prayers and danced in the firelight in a ceremony, determined not to quit until they received guidance.
"They continued their chants and prayers to the Great Spirit, asking for protection, help, and guidance for three days. Exhausted, his men finally fell to the ground, immediately falling into a deep sleep. The chief finally felt faint and feared that he, too, would succumb to the weariness of his body. But the Great Spirit gave a vision to Chief Ute as his warriors slept before the blazing fire.
"There was a pack of beautiful wolves nearby, just outside of the firelight, hungry and waiting for the men to fall asleep. Chief Ute feared the wolves might, indeed, get their wish, when suddenly, the flames of the fire burned brighter and climbed higher, reaching toward the stars. Then, a voice came from the fire. It was the Great Spirit. "Since you and your tribe have been faithful to me in your daily lives, I will aid you now in your time of need." He then walked out of the fire and appeared before the chief, who immediately fell to his knees, laying prostrate before him.
"The Great Spirit raised his hands and the wolves around the firelight suddenly came into the clearing, near the fire. This was unheard of. Usually wolves keep their distance from fire. 'Fear not,' the Great Spirit said. And the wise chief lay in wait, trusting, having complete faith.
"The wolves walked to each of the warriors and lay down beside each one. The Great Spirit raised his loving hand and the man and wolf became one, morphing one into the other.
"The chief was surprised by this and asked the Great Spirit why he had done this.
"'You and your men will now serve as protectors of the people,' the Great Spirit said. 'Fear not, for I am giving you a great gift. Since you and your tribe have been faithful to me, this is your reward. Use it wisely.'
"And with that, the Great Spirit raised his hand again, and Chief Ute also fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke the next day, he and his men found that the fire had burned out, but within each of the men, a greater fire burned like no other. From that day forward, the warriors used their great power to protect the people, never succumbing to the ways of the Evil one, and keeping their faithfulness to the Great Spirit.
"Chief Ute and his people soon discovered their power to turn into wolves at will, and quickly defeated their enemies. Now, when there is danger present, the wolves inside of us awaken. The people of this region were named after Chief Ute in remembrance of his great bravery and faithfulness to the Great Spirit."
"So, that's why I'm a wolf?" I said, breaking the magic of the moment. I realized that while Mark was speaking, darkness had fallen over the earth, and the moon had risen majestically above the forest. But despite the encroaching darkness, I could see everyone perfectly through my new eyes.
"That's why we are all wolves," Mark corrected. "We are all descendants of those great warriors and Chief Ute. The wolf flows through our blood and is awakened when there is danger grave enough to threaten the tribe's existence."
"So, there is danger present now, right? Or else we wouldn't have changed," I said, remembering the deaths of the hikers.
"Yes," Mark replied. "The Great Spirit has granted us this honor to protect the tribe."
"But it's your choice, Jessica," Dakota added, moving closer to my side. "The Great Spirit would never take away your free will."

“Are you sure you’re going to be okay?” Michelle asked. I really must have looked bad for Michelle to be this concerned. “I can drive you home and my dad can follow us....” Michelle rambled on, but I could hardly hear what she was saying. The buzzing in my ears was now a roar, like a freight train running back and forth through my head from ear to ear.

“I have to go, Michelle,” I said, pulling away from the curb, barely giving her time to close the door as I sped off. But I didn’t make it home. I made it as far as Granby Lake when the shaking was so uncontrollable that I had to pull over.

I threw the car into park and the keys under the mat in the driver’s seat. My body was shaking and quivering as pain coursed throughout my body. I screamed, almost a howl, as I ran for the woods. I didn’t know why, but I had the sudden urge to run, to let the coolness of the evening air soothe my skin... to be free.

My body shook uncontrollably as I ran faster than I had ever run before into the forest. The quivering ran from my hands and traveled throughout my body as I ran even faster, pushing harder, losing control of my body. What was happening to me? I screamed as I looked down to see my hands shimmering, changing into giant silver paws, but my screams ended in a howl as the quivering traveled down the length of my body, morphing and changing every cell. By instinct, I leapt into the air and my clothes shredded into pieces. I landed on four paws, running even faster. To where? I didn’t know. Was I going crazy? I looked around and nothing looked familiar. Where was I?

“This can’t be happening to me!” I thought, sprinting through the forest into the Colorado Rockies, as variations of pine and aspen rushed pasted. If I were in my human form, I would have been crying. As it was, dampness seeped from my eyes, soaking the fur underneath. I was almost to Wyoming when I heard voices inside my mind. I am going crazy! I thought to myself, as my powerful claws dug into the lichen along the forest floor, propelling my body even faster. To where? I didn't know.

Jake followed the pack long into the deep forest, stepping over strange flowers and unfamiliar roots as he went. The large black wolf spoke to him the entire way. 

“There are many within our world who have such gifts, but I haven’t met any like yourself who has been able to communicate with us in an age,” the wolf jumped onto a large boulder that stood at the base of the cliff and began trekking his way up, Jake followed suit. 

“The ones you’ve met, they could talk to you just like I can, right?” Jake grunted as he heaved himself up with one arm, relieved that some of the larger wolves were considerate enough to help him climb with his bruised body. 
“Yes, as well as many more things.” 

“Where are they now? Can you take me to them?” 

The wolf stopped in his tracks once they had reached the top of the cliff and turned to look out at where they had climbed from. Jake witnessed it for himself then as he focused his attention to the scene before him. 

In front of him lay the large open fields of the tree canopies, it expanded long and wide in all directions as far as his eyes could see. From here he saw the open space in the middle of the tree canopies where the lake was situated far off, he realised they must have walked very far, despite it not feeling long at all.

“They died.” The wolf said as he let out a large intake of breath. Then he turned away from the scene and continued to walk, Jake followed. 

“What do you mean they died? All of them?”

“You have a very rare gift, Jake. Not all would deem it fair that you only reap of its benefits.”

“I knew of one once,” spoke large brown wolf, “who had let others into her mind to harness that ability,” the wolf shook its head as well, “they took from her all that she had and broke her.” 

“It is a precious thing to allow another access into your own system,” the black wolf spoke, “many do not because of its untamed nature, you as the bearer of your own system know its limitations more than anyone. But if someone else were to use it, they would use it until the owner burnt out. This is why it is a forbidden practice.” 

“I see…” Jake started. He remained silent for a short while after as he pondered over the words of the wolves that had saved his life. What were the people like in this world that would cause them to speak so badly of them? 

Were they as evil as they were portrayed to be? He wondered if he would ever get a chance to meet other humans, then the fleeting thought crossed his mind that if they were truly as bad as the wolves claimed, he wouldn’t want to. 

 “And how would I allow someone access to my system if… if I ever needed to?” Jake asked. 

The wolves stopped, and then stared at him for a long time. 

“It would be the wisest thing you could do… to not let others know which system you possess.” 

“Right, well, of course. But I just meant- should the situation ever arise…”

“Jake,” the black wolf said sternly, “I do not say this for your sake alone. There are things people like you can take from creatures like us… things you can make us do, if you so desired. Not everyone would use this ability merely with good intentions.”

“It wouldn’t just be you in danger,” the smaller white wolf said, “It would be all of us.”

“Oh. Right… sorry.”

The group was quiet for a long time after that, trudging through the muddy moors and beneath large canopied trees. Something rustled in a nearby bush and Jake’s attention was caught by a squirrel that sprung up one of the tree trunks. 

“Hello there,” Jake called out to it, “by chance… have you seen any humans comes this way?” 

When the squirrel didn’t respond, Jake turned to look at the pack of wolves that regarded him. Mischief and laughter seemed to dance in their eyes, and some even looked as if they were trying not to laugh.

“What?” He asked innocently. 

“Are you… are you trying to ask that squirrel for directions?” 

“Yes? Well I just thought-“

Then the pack really did burst out laughing, and Jake felt his face heat up in embarrassment. Then he quickly furrowed his eyebrows as he stuck his hands into his pockets. 

“Right, silly of me to talk to a squirrel, how completely bizarre. Who could even imagine talking animals?”

Jake fell into step with the pack again as they began to walk off. Then a rumbling started in the forest and laughter died as quick as it had started. 

He noticed the way the formation of the group had changed. Now the larger wolves stood on the outskirts of the group, the smaller ones closest to the large black wolf who had situated itself right next to Jake. 

“There are many creatures that live in this forest, Jake. Some, like the squirrel, you will not be able to communicate with. There is something in this world that connects us all to a greater magic, humans experience this through their systems although not all are born with it.”

“Are animals born with system too?”

“No,” the wolf said quickly, “there are three categories of animals that exist. The first, like the squirrel, are wild and are connected to the most pure form of their animalistic nature. Ones like us, who are connected to the deeper magic, are able to co-exist with humans through some systems.”

“What’s the third?” Jake asked, but his question was answered by yet another low rumbling and he found himself stepping closer to the large body of the wolf.   

The large black wolf, which Jake had learnt was named Amoux, continued to tell him about the forests and the creatures that lived there. 

Amoux spoke of their home atop the cliff and beyond the lake where the rest of the pack lives and their reasoning for being so far from home. The pack of hunters had been sent out to scout the nearby areas for maddened beasts ravaging the area. 

They had found out it had been one of the wolves from their own pack who had gone missing months before. 
Their fight had led them into the cave where they had encountered Jake and the unicorn. 

“There is a strange, maddened thing running through the forest Jake, it has fallen ill.” Amoux informed him, “Beast attacking beast had never been heard of before, we all stuck to our own territory, but now…” 

“Do you know what’s causing it?”

“Some believe it’s in the water, some in the air. No one knows for sure, but it’s spreading hard and fast- and we don’t even know what it is.” 

“Maybe I can help,” Jake suggested weakly, despite the doubt in his mind as to what his abilities would even allow him to accomplish. 

Amoux seemed to have the same thought as he let out a huffed laugh, “Thank you, little human, I will hold you to your promise.”

“Well,” Jake muttered, “I didn’t really promise per se… I just offered help where I could…” 

But Amoux and the rest of the pack had already taken off at a faster pace, forcing Jake to follow them as they howled into the slowly approaching dusk.

Claws...Speed...Agility...Bite force...Communication 

All things that need to be considered in a pack fight. The only thing that I truly lack in is the communication.  Let's do this once people!

Felines: We are used to being pampered like Kings and Queens. 

Wolves on the other hand exist to provide "entertainment" and "keep us happy." (Well in my case Dad kept Mom a little too happy, If you catch my drift.)

My family is everything but normal. I'm the only daughter so I guess I get spoiled a lot more than usual. I have four older brothers, three of which are Wolves. Lucky us they are triplets, sometimes it feels like my brother and are the only sane people in the house. My Mom is an actress meaning that we were born in the spotlight. My Dad was also famous as a star player in the Pack league. 

The Pack league mostly filled with Wolves and the occasional Feline. Now Pack fighting is the most sure fire way to be put on a pedal stool in this world. Us Felines are mostly seen as performers and staying true to our dainty nature became the "Artsits" of our world. Of course Wolves were in the industry but they did most of the nitty gritty work.

However people didn't expect US to turn this world upside down

Two giant Snow Wolves ran in the Realm of Frozen Hell. As they climbed up a mountain in a few steps, a pair of Frost Lions showed themselves on the top of a mountain. 

With a dense killing intent, they roared as the Twilight Sky suddenly shook. The cold air solidified and the Snow Wolves felt a mountain crushing on them.

Sheng Tian and Leng Yue Yan on the Snow Wolves, frowned at the same time. 

"Fuck off or die." a chilling killing intent erupted from him as red liquid resembling blood condensed from the air.

The Frost Lions outer bodies were made of pure ice which was thousands of times stronger than Iron. Yet when the thick killing intent pierced them, their skin instantly cracked, threatening to be peeled off!

'This guy...' they thought, 'is not to be provoked.' and swiftly they ran away.

"Oh C'mon." Looking at the Ice Goddess who acted as if he didn't exist, Sheng Tian frowned and said. "Okay, I was wrong forcing you to touch the Snow Wolf. And You really don't like fluffy things. This is the truth. What more do you want me to say?" he pleaded,  but his lips twitched at his own lies.

She obviously liked fluffy and cute things. 

Yet, after she touched the Snow Wolf for an hour, she acted as if he forced her to touch them for so long. In fact, she even started ignoring Sheng Tian as if it was all his fault. 

He was able to bear the silence only for so long before he tried to reconcile. 

Leng Yue Yan ignored him and looked at the side. She didn't realise that her behaviour was like a wive throwing a tantrum. It only felt natural.

"She is falling into your clutches, you baddie!" Xiao Lian's voice sounded in his mind, startling him.

"And you fell into the clutches of this baddie?" Sheng Tian teased, as his vision entered the Snow Glazed Lotus Realm.

Looking at the charming figure lying down on the lush green grass, Sheng Tian had a sudden impulse to hug and kiss her. 

This impulse lasted only for a second before he was brought back to senses by the cold sensation on his shoulder.

Turning around, he saw Leng Yue Yan looking at him sternly. He raised his eyebrow in question.

"The place we are in is still the Outer Area of the Frozen Hell. Once we enter the Inner Area, the dangers and opportunities will skyrocket. 

And the Beast Empire is in the Core Area of the Frozen Hell. It seems that no human has ever entered it or at least didn't come out alive." she cold said. 

Sheng Tian nodded. He understood what she meant. 

Till now, they were only wandering in the Outer Region. They were yet to find any treasures. This is because the Outer Realm's quality was too low to be of use!

"Let's head to the Inner Region then." he signalled the Snow Wolves as they leaped down the mountain heading straight to the Dense Ice Forests and Boundless Snow Peaks!

"Junior Sister Qi Yue, did you find them?" Xu Tian asked as he and Shi Yan gazed at the beautiful young lady in front.

"Of course. This Soul Locking treasure is not be underestimated. My master was definitely being generous." the Core disciple Qi Yue smiled and raised the ancient needle in her palm.

Looking at the golden needle, Shi Yan and Xu Tian chuckled.

Looking at the direction the needle pointed, Shi Yan sneered "Humph! It seems they are going to the Inner Region. Seems like they can't wait to die. It's our chance." 

"No." Both Xu Tian and Qi Yue cut him off at the same time.

"What do you mean?" he frowned.

Qi Yue's lips curled up into a disdainful smile under her veil, and she spoke in disdain "Are you stupid? If we kill the now, we only get what they have now. If we wait for them to collect the treasures and then kill them...." her eyes glittered with a cunning light.

"Haha. What Junior Sister said is indeed the best way." Xu Tian smiled and gazed at Qi Yue's breasts, his thoughts became lecherous. 

Qi Yue snorted and acted as if she didn't see him, and she said "But we better follow them. If we can make use of them to obtain treasures, that will be even more better." 

Shi Yan and Xu Tian nodded.

Qi Yue infused her ice cold profound energy into the Golden Needle artifact and soon, the needle emitted a bright radiance and turned to a direction. 

"Let's go." with a flick of her wrist, their silhouette flashed with an icy glow and they disappeared into the snow.

Sheng Tian shivered at the unbearable cold. Looking at the majestic Snow Peaks ahead, he couldn't help but admire their lofty beauty.

However, the corner of his eye caught a towering tree taller than the highest Snow Peak, instantly grabbing his attention. 

"What the...." he raised his voice in surprise. 

Leng Yue Yan followed his gaze and saw the large tree, her beautiful eyes couldn't help but widen.

At the same time, the Snow Wolves carrying them, Xiao Long and Xiao Bai, shivered and muttered 
"The Imperishable Tree!" 

Sheng Tian's interest was piqued. Gazing down at the male snow wolf carrying him, he patted its back and smiled gently "Tell me more." 

However, Xiao Long quickly shook its head and begged "Boss, how about we talk about something else? There are a lot of hot chicks in my Cla..."

"Fuck. You think I am so lecherous and into wolves?" Sheng Tian knocked its head and glared.

"Pfft" a soft, melodious laughter sounded, carrying with it the amusement of a pure young heart.

Sheng Tian's hand stopped in mid-air as he looked at Leng Yue Yan who covered her mouth and chuckled. 

Gradually, a small smile formed on his face. 

"Forget it. You guys don't need to accompany this Young Master and his woman. We will face the danger on our own. Now, say what the Imperishable Tree is all about?" he waved his hand generously. 

"Mind your words." Leng Yue Yan's ice cold words were still as sharp and bone-chilling as ever, however, this time, he could vaguely feel that there is a subtle difference. 

If glares could kill, Sheng Tian would have died countless times under Leng Yue Yan's glares. Looking at the infuriated look in her eyes, Sheng Tian shook his head and said with a honest face "Why do you have to be so serious? I am just finding an excuse to let these poor things keep their pitiful lives. Or do you want them to come with us and die facing the dangers?" he gazed deep into her eyes.

"You...." Leng Yue Yan was never forced to such state by any one ever before! She didn't know how could such a person exist!

Obviously he knew that she liked cute and fluffy things, and is clearly using that fact to send them off to be alone with her. And the worst part? He used the threat of the fluffy things against her! If they died, won't she feel sad?

The Ice Goddess really wanted to beat the crap out of Sheng Tian. And she was also not willing to be alone with Sheng Tian. Unknown to herself, she was a little nervous to do that and wished to have the company of the Snow Wolves, who resembled her of the fluffy toys she played with when she was a kid.

"You win." gritting her teeth, she said word by word. There was no one in this world that could make the Ice Goddess admit defeat. 

"Kek. I never lose." Sheng Tian grinned at her. To protect her, he needs to be stronger than her, in everything he can!

"Tell me, you two fellows." Sheng Tian ordered the snow wolves. 

The Snow Wolves obediently nodded their head. During the time they spent, they began to appreciate Sheng Tian.

He was strong, smart, handsome and caring. 

Though he never said it out loud, the Xiao Long and Xiao Bai knew that Sheng Tian never rested for a moment in the past two days with them and secretly guarded Leng Yue Yan all the while.

Even if it was a Sky Realm expert, it is very hard to focus on a single thing for so long. Yet, Sheng Tian didn't flinch and placed all his attention on her. 

This showed how much he cared about her.

Not just that, he also knew how to make use of everything! 

Following them, they found countless small treasures which were extremely helpful to them. Since neither Sheng Tian and Leng Yue Yan had any uses for the, it was naturally the Snow Wolves that benefitted the most!

They began narrating the tales of the Imperishable Tree.

“Why am I so awesome?” Sheng Tian sighed for the ninth time as he proudly stood on a mountain cliff. 

The ground below was dyed red as the three people behind him pitifully spat out blood. They were trembling as they pointed their fingers weakly at the handsome Sheng Tian and shouted “Bastard! We had a deal! You go left and we go right! We split the loot fifty-fifty."

"Yet you...you betrayed us!” The strong, fair skinned young man in the middle of the three exclaimed, glaring at Sheng Tian and punching the ground with his bloodied fist. 

Sheng Tian bestowed the group with a generous smile as he gently shook his head and said,  “My fellow cultivators, I can’t let you commit such terrible crimes. I shall bear all the sins by taking the entire loot.” 

Then he raised his head and looked up at the sky, sighing once more in melancholy. “If I don’t go to hell, who will? Ai, Why am I so righteous?” 

The three speechless young men coughed out another mouthful of blood due to sheer anger and fainted on the spot. 

Sheng Tian lamented he closed his eyes. “No one can understand my plight. It’s so lonely at the top!” 

“Yeah, the top of shamelessness.” A female voice sounded in his head as his expression changed into a grimace.

I run as far as I can, hoping I'm going in the right direction to where I live. The cabin is surrounded by so many trees it's ridiculous. 

The cabin is quiet, too quiet, too unlike the constant hauntings of the house I live in. 

The cabin is quiet and peaceful, which only make the bangs and thumps in my head all the more louder. 

I want to go home. 

I want to go back to the home I thought I had, the home that was filled with never-ending laughter, where I had a father to look up to and a brother who's still alive. 

How do you find a place that never existed? 

"Nick!" 

I fight the urge to stop, to turn around and play the naive boy, to bring our friendship back to the way it used to be. 

Things are different now, and we both have to accept that. 

Two large wolves appear in front of me, their bodies blocking my path as I come to a halt, adrenaline rushing through my veins. 

I can continue running towards them, let them tear me apart, leave me as broken as I am on the inside. Will I go to heaven, like Chris hoped he would end up above the sky, or will I end up in hell for throwing away my own life? Maybe I'll just cease to exist, cease to think, cease to feel. 

It is tempting. 

"Nick, come home safely, okay?" 

I turn around, grabbing Aiden's arm as I run in the opposite direction, throwing all memory of direction to the wind as I think only of outrunning the wolves. I cannot leave my mother behind. I am nothing like dad, nothing like Chris. 

We end up alive, but lost in the middle of the woods. I stand for a few seconds, straining my ears for any sign of the wolves' pursuit. I hear nothing, so I sit down on the ground, resting my head against a tree trunk as I gasp for air. 

Aiden stands in front of me, not even flustered from our run. 

Sometimes I wonder if Aiden is even human. 

We apparently didn't get far enough, though, as the two wolves appear again from behind a cluster of bushes. 

I stand up, ready to run again but Aiden stops me. He nods to the wolves and they slowly nod back after a few long seconds, leaving us alone as they retreat. 

What the fuck? 

I should not question it, should accept it as one of the many ways he has lost his sanity, but I can't. 

"You speak to animals now? Have you lost that much of your humanity?" 

Aiden shrugs and takes a seat next to me. I ignore the urge to shift away. 

"Maybe." 

We sit in silence for a few minutes, Aiden looking around as I catch my breath. Somehow, I trust that the wolves are truly gone. 

"What happened with Kyle?" 

I look away. 

"I told you to stay away from me." 

You'll only get hurt. 

"And I told you I'd never leave you." 

But you did, didn't you? 

Aiden smiles at me, gentle and soft as if he is talking to a porcelain doll one push away from falling to the ground. 

"I came back, didn't I? Just like I promised. You're not getting rid of me that easily." 

I wish he would stop looking at me like that, like I am a broken boy who needs saving. I don't need it, nor am I a porcelain doll to be placed on a shelf until they bore of my superficial beauty. 

They say I am broken, yet they are not aware of the damage that can be caused by shattered edges. 

Aiden sighs, his blue eyes meeting mine as he puts on what he calls his serious face. I've only ever seen him this serious on the day he had to leave. 

"He really cares about you, you know." 

I snort. 

"He's only known me for five days." 

Aiden shakes his head. 

"You don't feel the pull towards him? You may have known each other for a short while, but I know you care about him as much as he does you." 

Aiden being wise is never a good sign, because it shows you how ignorant you've been that Aiden has to be the mature one. 

I do feel the pull. I cannot stop thinking about Kyle, cannot stop feeling the tingles and I hate it. I feel warm around him, empty when I don't see him, but I refuse to give in to this feeling, because it feels too similar to love, too similar to inevitable heartbreak. 

"It doesn't matter whether or not he cares about me. He's better off forgetting me," I look Aiden in the eyes, hating myself for my next words, but it has to be done, "and so are you." 

Hurt flashes in his eyes, and never in a million years have I imagined myself to be the one to cause him pain, but why delay it if it's only going to make things worse? 

Aiden shakes his head, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. When he opens them, his eyes are filled with the determination of someone not afraid to love. 

It is pathetic, but a part of me is relieved he hasn't given up on our friendship. 

"I know you've suffered, Nick. I don't know what happened, but you've suffered a lot and I won't say that I know what it feels like, because I don't," he lets out a sigh, his eyes pleading as he continues, "but what I do know is that Kyle cares about you deeply and you clearly like him too. Why won't you give it a chance?" 

Because there's no point in giving it a try when the outcome is clear. 

"Because that's just it. I like him, and Kyle will expect it to develop into love," I spit out the last word in disgust, "and it will ultimately end up in hurt on both sides because love doesn't exist, and nobody can accept that. I don't need another person to care about, because he'll leave eventually, just like everyone else." 

Aiden frowns. He is trying to figure me out again, knowing full well it is impossible. 

"Not everyone you care about has left, Nick. You were coping well with your father's absence, and your mom and Chris are still here, aren't they? You once told me you loved them more than anything else in the world." 

I laugh, throwing my head back and clutching at my chest. Tears begin to form in my eyes and I don't know if I am crying from sadness or laughter. 

"I also told you I wouldn't want to live in a world without any of them." 

Aiden looks at me confused, and I clench my fists. 

I do not need the pity, or the condolences, or the sadness of someone so eager to love. I do not know how to tell someone their friend had committed suicide, but there is no use in dragging this any further. 

I keep my head tilted upward, staring at the sky. Chris said he'd be watching me from above. 

Is he looking down on me, shaking his head at the monster he'd created? 

"Chris is dead, Aiden. I couldn't stop him." 

I turn my head to face him, and the shock on his face will haunt me for years to come. 

"He didn't love us enough to stay."

When his father turned his back on the family, leaving them to pick up the pieces of their relationship, Nicholas Carter turned to the three people in life he knew would never leave him - his mother, his best friend Aiden and his brother Chris. 

Aiden left the country a few years later, while Chris left the world of the living. 

Now after the death of his brother, left with nowhere else to turn, with nothing but a strong hatred for himself and everything around him, Nick has given up all hope on love and trust.   I sat in silence, dumbfounded by Jacob's question. Ware wolves? Katie? What was he talking about? 

"Noah? What are you thinking?" Jacob asked. 

"Why are you asking me about ware wolves, and what does that have to do with Katie?" I asked truthfully. 

"I know I sound crazy, but ware wolves do exist" Jacob shifted his weight from one foot to another. 

I stared at him, waiting for him to continue. 

"Tell me what you know about ware wolves" Jacob asked, beckoningly. 

"Um, I don't know where to start. I mean they're shape shifters, right?  They change under a full moon, and they eat human hearts?" I felt like an idiot, and my words were coming out so unsure. 

"You are correct about the shape shifter part, but ware wolves don't phase under a full moon. They change at will, and they most certainly don't eat human hearts. They protect humans." I stared at Jake, why was he saying all this? 

"So, what does this have to do with Katie?"

"Well, I'm getting there, but first I need you to be open minded, okay?" Jake was being so cautious. 

"Jake you're stalling, can you please get to the point?" I asked desperately. 

"Noah, you and I, both descended from shape shifting ware wolves. Both our grand fathers were descendants from native Americans. The Quileute Indians had magic in them. They could shape shift into ware wolves."

"So does that mean..." I couldn't form the words. 

"We are ware wolves" Jake concluded. 

I stood there, motionless, unable to comprehend what I was being told. 

"So, where does Katie come in here?" My hands clenched at my sides.

"The ware wolf gene gets triggered when other mythical creatures are near, and It is very easy for mythical creatures to sense each other. Just by being in the same room, the scent makes them very obvious. Ware wolves can sense witches by feeling the power radiating off of them." Jake paused, unsure if he should go on. I gave him an encouraging look. 

"We can also sense vampires, by the metallic scent of the blood they drink. We can recognize that scent as soon as they step within a ten mile radius. Their skin is smooth as marble, hard as rock, and cold as ice." That was it, the last sentence started to put things together. 

"I sensed the same scent as soon as Katie entered the room. I disregarded it, thinking that it might just be some other foul scent, but when I shook her hand, I felt the immense coldness of her skin. That put it all together for me, and I kew that she is a vampire." Jacob stood cautiously with his hands up, as if he may need to catch me. Did I look that miserable?

"Katie is a vampire? So are you a ware wolf?"

"Yes, I have a already phased a few times"

We stood in silence. 

"You have more questions" Jake read right through expression. 

"Yes. How exactly does this phasing thing work?" 

Jake smiled. 

"To phase you need some big emotion to consume you. Something that pushes you to the edge. It doesn't happen forcibly."

"Ok, well what about Katie, what do I tell her?"

Jake's expression hardened. 

"Noah, I don't know how strong she is, so I advise you, do NOT speak to her about this. Don't do or say anything that gives her even the slightest hint that you may know something."

"She really can't be, dangerous. She just asked me to the dance, and she is so kind." i said, with certainty in my voice. 

"Vampires are our mortal enemies. She already knows that I'm a ware wolf. She might try to lure you out and kill you. You need to be very smart and attentive."

Suddenly, my certainty changed to fear. Jacob noticed. His hand came up to my shoulder to comfort me. 

"Don't worry, Noah. I won't let anything happen to you. I will always keep an eye on her every move. No need to be scared, and anyways, you will soon turn into a ware wolf yourself. I wonder what color wolf you will be with your blond, spiky hair, and your pale skin. You'd definitely make a muscular one, because you already have some in your gangly body." Jacob teased, to lighten the situation. I smiled. 

Inside my mind I started to formulate a plan. I would confront Katie.

Chapter 6:
Austin's POV-
I walked out, chuckling. She was adorable. She looked so cute when she was angry.
"Of course, she is, you idiot." growled my wolf
"Why do you always call me an idiot?"
"It's fun. And you are an idiot. You're lucky that your stupid ass got such a good mate."
"Excuse you!"
"I never asked to be excused, did I?"
"I don't care. Shut your mouth and leave me alone!"
"No! You have to go back in the bathroom!"
"Where Andrea was?"
"Yes. And you will mate with her."
"Bro. She's going to kill me. And it would be considered ****."
"Oh. You puny humans."
"What do you mean?"
"****. What kind of name is that?"
"Shut the fuck up."
"Fine."
I shook my head, fed up with my wolf's behavior. How was I supposed to explain what a wolf is? I mean, it was fairly simple, but she would probably hate me. She would definitely hate me. Humans hate werewolves. Back in the early days of the earth, the werewolves used to rule. They would go and kill humans, until a new alpha stopped them. But ever since then, even though we have changed, humans still fear us. So what we did, is we brainwashed them. We made them forget that we exist. Once, a human had gone to the forest and seen one of us. Ever since then, we are a fairy tale to them. They think we aren't real. They pretend to be us for fun. They have no idea that we really exist.
We have our wolves inside of us. We are half human and half wolves. That's why I can talk to my wolf. We are two in one. When I shift into my wolf, I turn into my wolf, also known as Alex. They have names, too.
How can I make Andrea not freak out? I have to tell her sometime. I can't just hide it from her. I have to tell her that I am an Alpha of a pack of wolves. Hopefully she won't leave me or think that I'm crazy.
I heard footsteps coming. Andrea must have come out of the bathtub. "Hey. Can I talk to you?" I asked. I wasn't going to tell her that I'm a werewolf yet, but I did want to ask her what she thought of them. Did she think that they are cool, or was she afraid of them?
She looked at me, smiling. She looked so beautiful. She had an oversized T-Shirt with booty shorts. At least I think she did. I couldn't see any pants underneath her, but she probably had something on. Her hair was put in a messy bun, and she still looked wonderful.
"Yeah? Go ahead." She said. "First off, I thought you hate me. Why are you smiling at me?" I asked. She looked at me, and I could tell that she was going to give me a deep answer already. 
"I used to. When I didn't... personally know you. I had judged you based on rumors. I thought that you just played people's heart. I thought that you were rude and hurt others. But now that I know you, I can tell that you aren't like that. I had heard that you had taken hundreds of girls in your bed, but you didn't. Remember? On the first day that we met, I asked you if you had done any one night stands. You said that you hadn't. That tells me that you don't break hearts. You aren't as bad as I thought you were. And all this," She said, gesturing to the plane, "means that you care. You aren't rude. You don't hate. You're better than that. So no. I don't hate you." She said.
I smiled. "Good to know. Love you too babe." I said, winking. She rolled her eyes. "I never said you weren't stupid." She said, laughing. "Well, I am so there's no reason to deny that." I said, shrugging. "What's the next thing? I'm pretty sure you didn't call me here to just ask me that." She said, cocking her head to the side.
"You're right. As always. So I was watching a documentary. It was about werewolves. It was saying that they could be real. Now, me being the dumb idiot that I am, wasn't sure if they exist. What do you think? Do you like werewolves?" I asked.
She gave me a confused look. "That's... totally not random. Well, I think that they exist. If aliens exist, then why can't they? And I don't hate them. I think that they're cool. I like them." She said, shrugging. 
I smiled. "Cool. That's all I wanted to know." I said. She chuckled, but it soon turned into a yawn. "I'm tired." She pouted. I chuckled. "I can tell." I said, picking her up. She melted into my arms, and I planted a kiss on her forehead. "Come on. Let's go sleep." I said, walking towards one of the bedrooms. I placed her on the bed, getting in with her. I took her in my arms, cuddling her. She smiled, and fell asleep.

*The next morning*
Andrea's POV-
I woke up, Austin's arm around me. Holy shit! I dove right up. I couldn't sleep in the same bed as him! My mom would literally kill me.
Austin opened an eye and groaned. "You gotta do that, babe? I was sleeping."  He said, getting out of the bed. I glared at him.
"Why was I sleeping with you? What did you do? I don't even remember going to bed..." I said, trailing off. Austin looked at me, a bit confused. "I didn't do anything- I mean we didn't do anything. You let me sleep with you. In the same bed I mean." He said, blushing. He was cute.
"Oh. Weird. I don't remember doing that." I whispered. He looked up at me, smiling. Putting one arm around my waist, he led me to the kitchen in the jet. "You gonna cook something?" I asked. "You'll never know." He joked. I shook my head in exasperation. He walked over, and was about to start making breakfast, when I felt the plane shake. Austin turned around, eyes wide. I wondered why he was overreacting, it was just  a little turbulence. "I'll be right back." He muttered. I nodded, stitching my eyebrows. Why was he so worried?
"Austin? Why are you so worried? I mean it's not like we're going to-" I yelled. "Whoa!" He said. The plane and started to shake furiously. I grabbed onto a shelf nearby, holding on for dear life. Austin came running out of the bathroom. "Someone's sabotaged the plane!" He yelled. "What do we do?" I asked. "Come with me." He said, grabbing my arm. 
My heart was beating 5000 times a minute. Were we going to die? Who sabotaged the plane and why would someone try to kill us? 
He took me to the very back of the jet, and pushed a button. "Put this on!" He yelled. He tossed a suit to me, and I zipped it on. I knew what we were going to do. I would have to jump out of the plane. I gave him a nod, and we both tumbled out, hand in hand. I got out the parachute and we both slowly landed.
I got down, panting and grabbing my chest. "Well, on the bright side, I've always wanted to go skydiving." I huffed. Austin chuckled, but with the state he was in, it sounded more like a wheeze. "Are you okay?" He panted. "Yeah."
"I'm so sorry," He said, taking my hand, "I didn't mean to put us in danger. You know I would never try to hurt you, right?" He asked. I nodded. "Of course." I said. "But on a more important note, where are we?" I said looking around.
"That's a good question. And I don't know the answer. That's okay, I'll call my men. They'll get us a plane to get us to where we want to go. Are you okay with that?" He asked.
"Of course." I said. Austin reached for his phone in a tiny pocket that was shut tight. He started to dial a number and I looked away. To be honest, that was probably the most fun I had ever had in my entire life. Austin just made everything more fun. I couldn't believe it that we almost died. 
"Andrea?" Austin said. I spinned around. "Some people are coming for us. They'll be here in a minute. We'll reach in 5 minutes, I promise, okay?" He said, attempting to comfort me. I nodded. "Thank you. I have a question, though. Why would anyone try to hurt us? You said someone tried to sabotage the plane? How did you know that someone did?" I asked, tilting my head in confusion. He looked away and sighed. "It's hard to explain. I found a note in the bathroom saying that the plane was sabotaged. That's how I knew. Whoever was trying to hurt us, planted it on the jet before we got there. And for the other question, my dad is... well he has enemies. They aren't the best people, and will try to hurt us in any way possible, but something this big has never happened. I promise that it will never happen again." He said. 
"I trust you. I know you would never try to hurt me or yourself. Now, come on. Let's go the the spa." I said, pointing to the coming helicopter.
"Yeah," Austin whispered, putting his arm around me waist, "let's go sweetie."
"Don't call me sweetie!"
