Chapter 3. Essay competition (1)

"We are going to be have a essay competition in our school next week."

When Shiki sensei announced that, the students started murmuring among themselves.

"I haven't wrote a essay for years."

"I wonder if there would be some sort of prize."

"I hope it isn't mandatory to enter. I really suck at essays."

"Can't we have a video game competition or something?"

As the students were murmuring, Shiki sensei sighed and said.

"Listen to the whole announcement, first. The contest will be mandatory for all and there would be one winner for every class and the winner for every class will compete against each other for the prize money."

"I wonder how much is the prize money?"

"It's going to be a hassle if you want to win."

"Yeah, the winner would be probably from a literature club or a book club."

"Do those kind of clubs even exist?"

"Silent!!"

With Shiki sensei shout, the students again fell into a silence. Shiki sensei again sighed heavily and said.

"I am not finished yet. The competition will be held on Friday next week and there would be no classes that day. So, you could leave after submitting your essay."

With that the students all burst into excitement. They were all troubled by the pressure of exams and hearing that, they can leave early flushed them with excitement. 

There were many students who were already making plans like going to karaoke or a movie. The essay competition had given them a opportunity to relax for a bit.

As Ren was watching the class filled with excitement, Kei tapped him on the shoulder.

"Hey, Ren what do you think about that?"

"About what?"

"Of course, the essay competition. Do you also want to finish early and hang out like them?"

Kei said as he pointed towards the group of kids happily making plans. 

"I don't know. What about you?"

"I will probably write it till the end."

"Huh, you aren't the type to write till the end. Instead of writing, you will probably read a light novel or something."

Ren said as he stared at Kei confusingly. He knew that Kei wasn't the type to take things seriously. The only things he take seriously are light novels, mangas and anime.

"Well, I thought I will give writing a chance."

"You. Writing?"

"Yeah, it's seems fun. I thought I will take something seriously for once."

"You wanted to take something seriously and you choosed writing."

"Yeah."

Ren didn't knew what to think of it. Kei was taking interest in writing suddenly. He was confused by this but he didn't try to ask him the reason behind this. Ren knew that everyone has their own secrets.

"You are acting weirdly these days."

When Ren heard Kei's words, he was somewhat startled. The last thing he want was anyone finding about his identity.

"....You think so?"

Kei nodded his head at Ren's words and said.

"Yeah, you have been slightly weird these days. It's like you got somewhat mature suddenly."

"Maybe, it's just your imagination."

Kei shook his head at Ren's words and said.

"No, it isn't my imagination. You are suddenly taking interest in books. Previously, you only read some light novels but now, I see you reading those literature books everytime. You even had a smiling expression reading those."

"I have just taken a sudden interest in books."

"I think it's more than just a sudden interest. Are you thinking of going to a literary college or something."

"Literary college?"

Hearing the word literary college, Ren suddenly thought of the time when he used to study in the literary college.

It was also the time when his first book was released. He had suddenly gotten famous in the campus and everyone had started recognising him.

Professors had started giving him attention and they always looked at him with smiles. He had also gotten popular among the girls.

His popularity was so high that the campus queen had confessed to him and they had started dating. Of course, the relationship between them didn't last long and they broke up after a year but it was a time of his life that Ren can't forget.

It was the start of his fame and his destruction. How could he forget about that.

"Ren, Ren, are you even listening to me?"

"Ha, sorry, I was just thinking about something."

Ren quickly broke out of his stupor when he heard Kei's voice.

"Do you want to visit the bookstore later? I wanted to buy a book on essays."

"Ah, sure, I wanted to buy some books too."

Ren answered with a smile on his face. He don't know why but he was now looking forward to the essay competition.

In the staff room of teachers, Shiki sensei sighed as he soon as he sat down in his seat.

"Are you worried about something? Shiki sensei."

Shiki sensei turned his head towards the voice and noticed that the one who asked the question was Hinata sensei who was a chemistry teacher.

"It's nothing. I am just worried about that kids nowadays are more interested in video games than books."

"Hahaha, Isn't that obvious. Teenagers nowadays are more interested in games and movies than books."

Hinata sensei said with a laugh. She was a young female teacher who was still in her 20s. So, she could better understand the students mentality.

"Is it about the essay competition?"

Another teacher asked and Shiki sensei just nodded at that.

"Times are really degrading. When I announced in my class that there will be a essay competition, all the students were just happy about the fact that there would be no classes. No one seems to care about the competition."

This time it was Sato sensei who spoke. He was the oldest teacher in the school and was nearing his 50s. 

"It was the same in my class."

"Me too. They really don't care about the essay competition."

"They are just happy that they will be able to leave school early."

Hearing the conversation several teachers shared their grievances and sighed. They were upset that students were more interested in leaving school early than the essay competition.

"Nakai sensei must be feeling bad."

Hinata sensei said as she looked at Nakai sensei who was silently reading a book in the corner.

Hearing her words, all the teachers looked at Nakai sensei but he didn't say anything and just continued to read his book.

For him reading a book was more interesting than a conversation.

"Yeah, Nakai sensei, you even pushed for the essay competition. Aren't you feeling bad that students aren't interested in it?"

A teacher asked him but Nakai sensei still didn't answered. He was still focusing on his book.

All the teachers just sighed seeing his behaviour. They all know that Nakai sensei wasn't the talkative type.

He was the literature teacher and it's been five years since he had started teaching in this school and his behaviour and attitude hadn't changed at all.

Although his attitude had pissed some of the teachers but they do not do anything as he teaches well and do his work diligently. It was just that he was more interested in reading books.

After sometime, Nakai sensei finally put down his book and smiled while looking out of the window.

"I wish there can be someone who can surprise me in this competition."

He muttered under his breath and continued to smile while looking outside the window.

Fame, wealth, prestige, genius, destruction, despair, loss and failure.

Those are the eight words which describes Ren's life completely.

He was hailed as a genius but his arrogance led him to despair. From a genius, he became a failure.

He was just struggling with his life when fate gave him a second chance.

Now, what will he do after he found himself waking up in another world.

After Mrs. Lee left, Class Forty-nine lost its headteacher and math teacher, which was a hassle. A class couldn't have any headteacher or a math teacher.
Many math teachers wanted to teach this top Class, and many were willing to be the headteacher. This made it difficult for Director Bull to make a decision. He examined the teachers' teaching results over the years and finally decided to have Natalie, another math teacher, to take charge of Class Forty-nine. After the decision was made, the school was finally back to normal.
In the evening, Sophia came to the exam center on time to take the exam.
There, she saw the boy she met in the alley that day, and smiled and said, "Hello. Nice to meet you again."

Director Bull didn't know much about chemistry. When he saw two chemistry teachers talking in a low voice, he walked over, "What's wrong?"

He handed the paper to Director Bull, "Full marks."
Director Bull was shocked.

When Hammer saw her coming out, he got out of the car and walked to her.

Sophia took a look at him and saw that he had dyed his yellow hair back into the black, neatly combed and in place. The suit was also changed into a black, very simple and generous style.
Catching Sophia's gazing, Hammer said with pride, "Well? Do I look a little more mature today?"
Sophia didn't answer the question but asked, "You're looking for me?"
Hammer smiled and said, "I just want to thank you and take you to dinner. You're not available last time. And I didn't know where you live. So, I had to wait for you here. Just give me a chance, or I'll come here every day."
"Are you threatening me?"
"No. I never meant that. I'm just grateful…" Hammer hurriedly said.
Sophia could not stand his brother and had to say, "All right. But I don't want to have dinner. I had some desserts before Class, and I'm not hungry now."
Hammer came over, "It's fine. We can play somewhere else, bar, KTV, cinema… anywhere."
Sophia thought about it. She was neither drunk nor wanted to go to a bar. And she was a little uncomfortable with strangers on KTV. It was better to go to the cinema.
"Let's go to the cinema." Said Sophia.
"Okay." Hammer nodded at once.
But there was another problem. "I don't know where to place my bike…" Sophia said.
"Find a chauffeur," Hammer said without thinking.
Was there a bike rider? Sophia was confused.
She had to leave her bike at school first. Then she had to go to school by bus the next morning. But she did not tell Hammer that for fear he would make trouble again. She thought he looked a little bit… stupid. She called her mother and said she would be back a little late so that she wouldn't worry.
Hammer was happy to open the door for her. When she sat in, he closed the door in a very handsome posture. Then he went to the other side and sat down next to her.
"Let's go to the cinema," Hammer told the driver.

He had not seen Ryan for a night. He thought the guy was going to rebel.

Albert was helpless, "What love desserts? Come back now."
"Don't worry, sir. Listen to me." Ryan said, "Luckily, I'm here today. Do you know what I saw? Do you remember the kid who drove a shitty car the other day waiting for Sophia at the school gate? He came to her again today. I heard him say he was taking her to the movies. Aren't you mad?"
Albert wanted to say he was not angry, but… he couldn't speak it out.
Hearing no words from Albert, Ryan laughed, "Sure enough, like me, you don't like this guy stealing behavior."
Albert said nothing.

A good number of authors in Webnovels are still going to school. I always felt respect for these authors because they are able to sneak some time in their busy schedule to still write their stories. 

There are a few authors I know like Rianolinon, and Zehell who updates on a daily basis. These two are the princesses of the 'Daily Updates and Fantasy section' and their novels are often featured on a weekly basis. 

There was an author in the Inkstone Server that once said that as long as you can update on a daily/regular basis, you will get readers. In my opinion, this is very true. When I was still a reader, I prefer reading novels that are updated on a daily basis. It gives me something to look forward to every day.

Also, updating on a daily basis gives you a higher chance to appear on the "Daily Updates Section" that can only be seen (I think) when using browsers. Well, most people read using their cellphones while others (like me) prefer to read them using a desktop.

For new writers who want to have traction/exposure in Webnovels, uploading daily chapters might give you that fan base you are hoping for. Of course, you also need to write an interesting story in order to make them stay.

Mishak: It was impossible to do anything other than school work especially when I was in high school.

Mr.McGuffin: still got an A. Yeah I finished all my HS requirements by my 11th grade year. I can technically graduate a year early, but i get free college classes if I don't so.

"Man, Jae-Sik is good."
Jae-Sik's father was a blue-collar labor worker, but he loved writing a poem. Yes, he was a poet. He was not a financially savvy person, and Jae-Sik's family had suffered from poverty. Jae-Sik was bullied during his school years, and his only happy time during those days was when he read cartoon books by himself. Gun-Ho was living in a shabby townhouse, and he was friends with Min-Hyeok and Jae-Sik who had about the same home environment, and Jae-Sik's family lived in a basement of a townhouse. Gun-Ho sometimes spent time with Jong-Suk who was two years younger than him as well since he liked Jong-Suk's mother's Seolleongtang (an ox bone soup).
Min-Hyeok and Jae-Sik were often beaten up by Won-Chul and Suk-Ho in those days, and they didn't even try to fight back, maybe because of their sense of inferiority which came from the different financial situation of their families. Fortunately, Gun-Ho had a larger frame at that time, maybe because of Jong-Suk's mother's Seolleongtang, and he wasn't often targeted for bullying.
The children at that time didn't call Jae-Sik with his name, but instead, they just called him like, "Hey, basement."
And they often asked Jae-Sik,
"Hey, you, basement! Carry my school bag for me!"
Whenever someone mentioned the word "basement," Jae-Sik lowered his head with his slumped shoulders.
 
Won-Chul Jo's family lived in a nice condo. His mother was a pharmacist, and she ran her own pharmacy in the town. Byeong-Chul Hwang's parents were both school teachers, and Suk-Ho Lee's father owned a lumber mill. These three people lived in the same condo, and they all went to college in Seoul. Currently, Won-Chul Jo was a manager in a big company; Byeong-Chul Hwang graduated from KAIST and worked as a researcher in a research center in Pangyo. As his parents were both school teachers, Byeong-Chul had the highest grade in high school. Suk-Ho Lee, whose father was running a timber mill at that time, owned a bar at Gyeongridan Street until recently with his parents' financial support, and he was now doing some business in China. Min-Ho Kang, who joined a civic organization, had lived in a different condo. His father was a politician; he was a member of the city council at that time.
 
Gun-Ho's father was a labor worker in an industrial complex, and then he later worked as a security guard. Min-Hyeok's father was a bus driver, and after he retired, he now drove an art academy shuttle for children. Jae-Sik's father was a labor worker who always wrote a poem, and Jae-Sik hadn't contacted his parents for a while now. His father had a bad credit score and that affected Jae-Sik's life badly.
 
It seemed like the life of the father and his son looked alike. The son seemed to follow his father's footprints in some way. Surprisingly though, Gun-Ho was the most successful among these high school friends, and he was running his own companies.

This is the story of a poor young man whose poverty even shreds apart their family willing to climb his way through society and into the top. A very realistic novel that moves away from fantasy and sci-fi and focuses solely on the issues of society and life.

It is indeed hard for someone like me who is very different from other classmate moreover being a fresher in India a great problems..
Since last time I was found while writing my diary by my mother I quit writing it in any book so now i look for a digital platform to write...
This book wold be more like my everyday life at college...

He Qun was a little embarrassed.
She had been very considerate towards Su Cha. She had waited till all the students had left before she brought the matter up with Su Cha. Usually, teachers would have rushed to find the student for questioning immediately after finding out about the issue. That would have caused a substantial negative impact on Su Cha.
But now, Su Cha's straightforward statement made He Qun a little flustered.
"The teachers were worried just in case…"
Su Cha glanced over at He Qun, her deep gaze was full of meaning, and it made He Qun shudder involuntarily in fear and nervousness.
After three seconds, Su Cha suddenly lifted the sides of her lips into a bright smile, "If you do not have any other questions, can I leave now?"
He Qun immediately nodded, "Yes, you may leave. Remember to redouble your efforts for your college entrance examinations. I believe in you."
After she nodded, Su Cha turned and left.
He Qun sighed in relief.
That was strange. As a teacher, He Qun was dignified when she met students. But, when she was speaking to Su Cha, she felt herself feeling nervous, and it was as if Su Cha was the one interrogating her.
On the way back to the teachers' office, He Qun shook her head as she tried to empty her mind of such ridiculous thoughts.
At night, the teachers were working overtime to grade the test papers at the fastest possible speed. They would have to release the test results tomorrow morning before recording the results digitally on the computer to release it to the parents of the senior students.
After the final results were released, He Qun was surprised to find out that Su Cha had not only improved significantly in Math but also in other subjects.
The Liberal Arts examination could be said to be the most difficult as it was harder to score as compared to Math. However, Su Cha managed to get close to full marks for the reading comprehension section.
Other than composition writing and some basic deductions, Su Cha managed to score 129 marks for her language.
English was 117 marks, and the Literary Summary was 240 marks.
After summing up her results, Su Cha's total score was 606 marks. With her achievements, she was ranked fifth among the students in her cohort.
How could that be!!
He Qun was astonished.

It was two marks away from 400. Why is there such a ridiculous difference this time?

    They couldn't take a full-body picture of Qin Guan though, because it might be too small for the audience. They discussed it and finally decided to take a photo from his knees up.

Today we’ll focus on the five main subjects. Let's start with Chinese." Huang Jiajia nodded eagerly and picked up the first paper. Lowering her head, she began to write quickly. Meanwhile, Qin Guan read a book beside her.

    June was drawing near, and the temperature was getting higher and higher, signalling the arrival of summer vacation. However, before the summer holidays, students had to go through the examination period.

    There was also a heated competition for the scholarship that semester. For Qin Guan, who had a balance of more than 30,000 yuan, that scholarship was still a large source of income. Huang Jiajia was really excited. Although she hadn’t passed Math, she had made great progress. She was just thinking of acting like a spoiled child and begging Qin Guan for praise, when he looked at his watch and stood up. It was not early for him, so he planned to leave. They would meet again after Huang Jiajia had taken the General Examination. 

Huang Jiajia was both angry and disappointed. Qin Guan’s mind was occupied by his courses, his part-time jobs and Cong Nianwei, so she had failed to find a way in.

    She threw her teddy bear on the floor with force. I hate him and love him at the same time! He’s such a simple-minded man, both in my reach and out of it... As Huang Jiajia thought about how she had gotten along with Qin Guan, she picked up her teddy bear again and held it in her arms.

    Unaware that he had broken her young heart, Qin Guan was riding his shabby bicycle on his way back to college. Huang Jiajia’s good scores had given him a sense of achievement that had healed the wound caused by Cong Nianwei. He parked his bike and returned to his dormitory with his books.

    All his roommates were studying inside. What cunning boys! They pretended to be at ease in the classroom, but reverted to their original status when they came back home. They were the most annoying students in the whole college. They acted relaxed before others, smiling about their high scores as they said, "It was unexpected!
