Well, it could be worse, I thought. In my previous Aspects, I had already been a malformed Demon, corpse, walking skeleton and many more. I'd even had my soul split in two, which I can honestly say that it was an experience I do not wish to repeat. Scrutinizing my reflection, I was inclined to believe that I had been lucky. 

I was young, I looked healthy, I was passively attractive, had a decent long hair but somewhat lacking from what I was used to. I wore a black hooded attire that was over my pair of leggings and as I continued to speak to myself, I hear someone's voice inside my newly acquired head. 

"Jeans..." whispered the distant voice. 

With boots of sturdy leather. On my left arm, the one with the scared sigil, I had a stack of bracelets of some braided material in various colors. My ears were pierced in several places while the breasts were disappointingly small but, as a being who used agility as an advantage, I never found mammaries particularly fascinating. I was just about to inspect my rather promising nether regions when the whispering voice that had spoken earlier, regarding the Jeans, spoke more sharply as if she was reading my thoughts. 

"What the hell are you doing?" It said. 

That must be my host, I thought. I'll admit, I'd been lost in exploring my current Aspect that I had hardly notice or thought to the original occupant of this form. In truth, I was hoping that she would've either vacated the body or had been absorbed by my Soul as I did with that Night Elf. 

"Oh, um, sorry," I said awkwardly. 

Yet despite my apology, my host seemed more upset than before. "Who are you? And what the hell are you doing?" 

"Don't panic," I said. "But... remember that computer game? The one that I think you were playing a moment ago? The one with the giant Demon with the mask?" 

"Now I'm hearing a demon's voice?!" the Host yelled in fear and then to anger. "Lovely! That's the perfect thing I need right now..." 

"No, really," I tried to explain to her. "That was me. I'm Zevrad." 

"Oh god, I really am going insane. That or Adam spiked my drink. That's right. He must've done that. Come to think of it, it's exactly the kind of thing that he would find funny. I'm. Going. To. Kill. Him. Where's my phone? I'm going to kill him this time." 

I made a mental note to myself to remember this 'Adam' person. He sounded cool. 

I tried to calm her down again, "You know, 'insane' is such a negative word. I prefer the word unpredictable. Or chaotic. Since Chaos is where the party is at." 

For a moment, there was no response. Nothing coherent to me at least. Just a kind of mental squall. Then, her anger seemed to recede as she spoke to me. "So, you're saying that I'm not insane? That I'm not tripping at all?" 

"For all I know, you're insane like everyone else. To have dreamed of the Demon like me. Since dreams can shape reality, at least on some level. You and many others dreamed of me. And here I am."

"Okay, stop!" The voice yelled again. "Let me get this clear. You're telling me you're a demon. As in, the Burning Legion?" 

"Kind of. I long forsook my position amongst their ranks. Allow me to introduce myself more clearly this time. Throughout my history, I was the original Fool, Slayer of my Kin, Devil of Darkshore, Demon of Delusions, and so many others. For now, I am Zevrad Stargazer. In person." 

Then I began to realize that I had made a minor error, "Well, not in person. Or at least not in the form that I am accustomed to when introducing myself. Which does not imply that I am ungrateful for your hospitality." 

"Yeah..." said the voice, sounding calmer now. "I'm totally not buying this. This is all a crazy dream. It has to be. That or a trick. Or maybe I'm just zoning out the way that I sometimes do in class. Or it's a Disorder. I dunno, like sleeping sickness or something. Doesn't that affect the brain? Or is that a zombie plague? Is there a zombie plague? Or did I make that up as well?" 

I tried to explain about Dreams, the gods, and our long incarceration within the dungeons of the Black Fortress. I informed her about the paradox of what we call Reality and its infinite possibilities. The Aspects that we leave scattered across the universe that allows us to transcend time as I explained that even Death is the subject to the rules of Order and Chaos. How nothing ever really dies as our volatile essence can be extracted into Aspects of ourselves like water into a bottle. All of them separate but equally real, equally true to the core. 

There was silence now. A long silence. 

Then the voice said, very calmly, "When I see Adam, I'm going to kill him. And then I'm going to kill him again, just to make sure." 

For a moment, I wondered if other beings that I know followed me into my host. The sentiment, even words themselves, seemed strangely familiar. Then I thought that perhaps my host had maybe played too many games such as World of Warcraft. And had therefore acquired some of their less appealing manners and behaviors. 

Then, somehow, she must've caught my train of thoughts as she next said, "But World of Warcraft is just a game. Made up of light and pixels. It isn't real. How could it be?" 

I shrugged, "You say 'pixel' but I say 'imagination.' Dreams are made of them, sweetheart. Countless thoughts in which you pulled me out of and, as such, I'm as real as anything else that can be imagined. More so than some, in fact," I went on as I attempted to explain my knowledge of how I came to be and my experiences of coming from Chaos through Dream. 

"You may not be aware of this, but there's actually a theory in my world. A theory that thoughts are made up of the same particles that make up everything and that Dream is the other side of Reality. That without Dream, there would be no thoughts to shape reality." 

I waited for my new host to process this information. I could feel her struggling against the situation, against me, reality, you name it. 

"This is total b*llsh*t," she said. "This is all a figment of my overdeveloped imagination. I mean, why would a Demon choose me? And why wouldn't it be-" 

"Wouldn't be who?" I inquired leaving choosing to set aside to correct her that I am 'The Demon' and not just 'A Demon.' 

"Nothing. No one," she said. "God, now I'm arguing with myself. That's what comes of reading too much instead of being on a productive club. Just close your eyes. He'll go away as soon as he sees you're onto him. He's just a part of you, you know. A fragment of your subconscious. There's nothing he can do to you that you haven't already done to yourself. Just close your eyes and count to ten. One. Two. Three-" 

I waited. 

I had plenty of time. Slowly, I felt her resistance collapse, her disbelief, and panic recede. Then the host asked, "Are you still there?" 

"I'm afraid so." 

She screamed, "When will you be LEAVING?!" 

That was inhospitable, even rather hurtful, I thought. "You know, some people might feel privileged being a host of Yours Truly." 

The host seemed to have shrugged if she could. "No offense," she said. "But I have enough identity problems as it is without having to cope with a Demon living in my mind. And besides, how do I even know you're who you say you are? I mean, you don't sound like a demon to me." 

I corrected her this time, "I am 'The' Demon. Not 'A' Demon. And where do you get that rubbish from anyways?" 

"Everywhere! Books, films, games." 

"Oh please," I could see that myself having constant migraines with this one. "How old are you? Nine?" 

"Don't be ridiculous," the voice replied with a tone. "I'm twenty-one." 

"You can't be serious," I said. Recalling to myself that twenty-one in 'Human' years was already an adult. 

"At least I'm not a has-been from a stupid video game. And if I'd know you were a dick, I would've massacred you ten times over if I could rather than reading up on the lore." 

I sighed, "Fine, you are twenty-one. I'm sorry... um... what was your name?" 

My host gave a sniff, "They call me Jess." 

"Okay, okay. I'm sorry Jess. We started off on the wrong foot here. Could we perhaps start again? It isn't easy dying, being tormented for eons, coming back through Dream, then finding myself in a body who doesn't want me around. I mean. Just give me a break, okay? Think of me as..." 

I searched for the concept of the word within the mind of Jess so that she might understand. 
"...think of me as a refugee. A refugee from a war zone. Who lost his friends, his family, his whole planet. Would you really turn me away? Knowing what I'd been through?" 

A long silence, until, "Okay. I'll give it a try. You know, I loved the lore."

"Well, I guess that's a start. I have to admit, my stories are cool, although they don't show me in the most flattering light. I'll have to put the record straight. Remind me to do that sometime. Still, if I was your favorite, they must have got some of it right. Right?" 

"I never said you were my favorite," said the host with a hint of amusement. "Besides, you've never been mentioned in the lore."  

"What?"

"Your name, Zevrad, it's never been mentioned in the lore." 

"Oh." Well, that really did hurt my feelings. I'd kind of assumed that the imp who praised me painted me as the important character that I was. Now I discover that I am not mentioned in the lore. Not even once. I'd kind of assumed that the reason I'd ended up in this body was that the original owner and I had some intimate connection. And now she was trying to tell me that I don't exist in World of Warcraft's lore. 

Instinctively, I searched her mind. It felt a little like searching through a complex storage system. There were various galleries, archives, and directories filled with all kinds of information. Memories, facts, vocabularies, fantasies, feelings. I sensed that some of these would be hard to access, with locked doors with unlit rooms inside, but there were enough rooms that were well-lit. Giving me access to sections for me to find what I was looking for. I found a gallery devoted to the lore characters of World of Warcraft. Comics, books, posters, games, you name it. Oh, she was a fan all right. Even if her version of us was almost absurdly far from the truth. And now I suddenly realized why those pictures on the wall had seemed vaguely familiar. 

I sat down in astonishment. 

"Sylvanas... and Anduin? You're telling me that Sylvanas and Anduin are your favorites?" 

My host gave another one of her mental shrugs, "Well, you know..." 

"The b*tch who massacred both followers and foe just because she can? The man child who was so tragically incompetent that he sank his Alliance straight to the bottom of the ocean?"  

"You may be in my mind," said Jess, "but you're not going to tell me what to think." 

"Okay. Okay. You're the boss." 

There followed a lengthy silence, during which my stomach grumbles lustily. "I think that's a queue for breakfast," I said. "I take it we are on an agreement to that?" 

Jess just gave another shrug, "I'm not hungry." 

"Are you serious? I'm starving!" 

A sense of denial that something buried deep in one of those locked and unlit rooms from the recess of her mind. It was odd and rather disturbing. My previous incarnation had never once resisted any kind of pleasure. Besides, it had been eons since I'd experience as much as a loaf of bread let alone a cup of wine. 

"Come with me, Jess, in which we answer the cravings of our flesh," I said.

"No, we can't..." Jess refuted. 

And then, with the same instinct that had driven me to sort through my host's mind, I stepped forward and took full control of the body.

"Let me sing for you, alright?"

I heard a voice from my dreams. It was a girl-- longing for comfort and warmth.
I woke up with broken brushes, messy canvas, and empty bottles of pills. As my eyes land upon the other side of the cold window-- I saw something different from what I've seen before.
I saw something catastrophic.
Something depressive.
Something darker.

Author's first notes:

I've started writing stories since I was a kid, the same time I learned how to draw. Back then, I thought of writing as just one of my hobbies because I really more into drawing stuff than writing stories. I even made a comic once but never made sense due to lacking plotlines and other stuff [laughs at cringe]. Then when in high school, that's where I kinda(?) take it seriously-- but it still sucks and cringey by the way. Most of the time before, I always write horror stories, especially ZOMBIES-- I have this UNDYING love of the Zombie genre. Night of the Living Dead (1990 remake), Dawn of the Dead (2004 remake), and of course, one of the best zombie stories I've ever dive into was The Walking Dead (comic). To me, Night of the Living Dead restores the classic movie and innovates it at the time, and I love it. The Walking Dead set the bar high for the zombie genre, and Dawn of The Dead introduces me to the running zombies (thanks to Zack Snyder), which scared me more than the walking ones. Those films, books, and comics were my inspirations to write this novel (which will have some references *wink wink*).
2 years ago, also in high school, I'm planning to make a graphic novel with the same title as this. Well since I suck at writing stories, the story of the scrapped Dead on Arrival story was like a replica of Telltale's The Walking Dead [laughs at cringe again]-- but months later I threw it all away because I don't want it to feel like a replica of something, so I've waited for myself to improve a bit in writing. This story I'm giving you guys right now might not be unique or might not give something new, I wrote this story because I want to tell people that these characters inside of the novel are based on the people I really cherish.
2020 was said to be the WORST YEAR as I'm hearing a lot in posts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. But to me, honestly speaking, it was one of the best years. Everything was unexpected, people come popping out of nowhere, people dying everywhere, any shit you can even think of-- but for some reason, in that year, I have met the best people that came into my life. Those people became my friends, then developed as best friends, now I think of them like my brothers and sisters. It was late-October and early-November of 2020 when I started thinking about reviving this title and completely writing a new story with new lore. Writing this novel for me was like writing 200+ pages of love letters just for 12 people [chuckles].

The dead comes back to life, and they run-- a more reason to fear on. Lin, Mae, Jon, and Zack, using their immunity, fights their way amongst the hordes of living corpses to preserve their own future.

Sitting up, bone crunching sounds echo in the deep, isolated forest. Finding herself inside a shallow pit filled with dead corpses, Lin Quin was puzzled as she found herself in an unfamiliar place after she had died from massive blood loss in a freak car accident while on her way to work. 

Finding herself amid a valley of death and corpses, she herself was at a loss as she why she was in the pile with the rest of the corpses. 

'What is this?' She asked herself, wondering, racing through her thoughts to figure out what was happening. Looking down at herself, she wore blood red and white robes as all her on her body. 

"Arrrr! "'What?' Lin quickly discovered thay she could not speak properly anymore. 

Standing, it took her a moment to collect her thoughts until suddenly, her bones and muscles had stiffened drastically when she tried to exit the shallow mass grave site. 

Turning her gaze to the mountain of corpses all around her, she gasped and let out an indifferent expression as inside, she was crying when she glanced around at a moving hand. The next thing she knew, the corpses had begun moving on their own as this shocked Lin as she herself did not understand what was going on. 

'Is the world come to it's end? 'She wondered religiously. 

For a moment, those who stood up and had revived like Lin, suddenly turned to each other and began wondering around aimlessly. Lin then figured that they were not like her. Rather, they possessed no concept of awareness. They were only senseless corpses. 

Soon, it dawned on Lin that she herself, was brought nack as some form and had become a zombie. Shaking her head hetero, hearing the cracking bones on her neck, she looked down and felt a strange feeling... as there was nothing to be felt.

Coming to terms with her new zombie identity. The crowd of zombies had begun moving and Lin though what the harm was in following the herd. Shifting in place as she traveled through the haunting forest, there was soon a bright glowing light off in the distance. 

Rising over a hill and stopping, Lin stsred across the vast open planes and froze as she watched soaring flame plumes of fire rising from a nearby town. Feeling the pain of what it uses to feel like to fear, Lin spent another minute gazing at the scorching inferno as she was suddenly brought back to her senses as a zombie bumped into her shoulder whole passing her by. 

The zombie horde had continued toward the town and of course, Lin followed in order to figure out what was happening.

Arriving at the town, groups of zombies had formed all around as the sound of bones crunching and flesh ripping echoed in the cold night air. The moon was full and only a few clouds passed overhead, leaving pockets of moonlight as they passed over the now destroyed town. 

Walking like a zombie, Lin was definitely certain that if she was in her normal body, she would have thrown up several times over after witnessing the sight. 

'Huh. What's that group of zombies doing over there? 'Gazing at a large group of zombies banging on the large wooden doors to a workshop, Lin grew curious and headed over. 

'Oh... This scent... It's so sweet. 'Lifting her head slightly, a few low crunching sounds of boned echoed as she lowered her head and stood before the group of zombies. 'From what I can gather, if I am also a "zombie" like these guys, then that scent that I'm smelling all over is most likely humans!? '

Pushing the thought aside, Lin lnew she had to do something or otherwise, those people trapped inside would become lunch for the zombie horde. Looking around carefully and slowly, Lin noticed a fire torch and walked over to pick it up. 

However, after much, much difficulty, she essentially gave up as her body was as stiff as a wooden board. Turning her gaze, she looked up and noticed a cart with hay on the steep side of the hill. Walking over at a slow pace, she churned her head to a shovel resting on the wall and with great difficulty, succeeded in removing the stone under the wheel of the cart. 

Watching the cart instantly rush down the slope, the group of zombies was violently pushed and rammed over. Blocking the doors with the cart, Lin felt glad she could help, if only a little.

'What the-'Surprised by the sudden tone of a mechanical female voice, Lin stood shocked as she stiffly spun to find where the sound came from.

'What is all this? Why can I see an a transparent "tab" in my vision? What... I don't get it?!' Lin thought and was royal confused as to what all of the information meant. 'Ugh! How can I make this go away... Urgh! Close! "

The tab in her field of vision suddenly disappeared. Starteling Lin, she took a seat near a stone wall and after a while, began experimenting with the strange translucent "tab". 

'What exactly does this mean... I wonder? 'Curious yet, a hint of adventure shone in Lin's ghastly hazy blue eyes.

The face that looked back at me was gaunt my cheeks hollow like my very flesh had melted and shrunk I no longer looked like I had before but I also wasn't a zombie unless I was the rare special type of zombie but I didn't have any zombie traits infact I just looked like I'd not eaten in a month and hadn't seen the sun either so I checked my wounded hand and it was completely healed. I had survived the plague I was glad but I looked like I was a stick figure I needed to eat something and now so I dug out everything I had left for food a single can of baked beans and a pack of chips and a couple cookies that were stale but edible and I ate it all.
     I hit up every apartment in my building that I could and cleaned them out food wise like some kind of bottomless food pit and by the time I had finished clearing out the last apartment I received a notification. The notification read 'due to hosts dedication and overwhelming completion of the first hidden milestone host received the following rewards: race change : Arcane elf - by pleasing the deities your reward has been maximized you are now an Arcane Elf - Arcane elves have the highest capacity for magic particularly arcane magic in a living being + 40% arcane potential +25% general magic potential : passive bonus for completing a hidden objective by 35 times the mission requirement: mana core: large mana core- a powerful boost to any spell casters power grants +25% mana regeneration +25% mana capacity : bonus for completing a hidden objective by 3 times requirement: 3 Divine boons granted.
    I was sitting there completely stunned apparently I wasn't mislead and had done some serious work getting my objectives completed and now it was asking me to pick my divine boons which was quite a list including items enchantments and unique abilities but I honestly only found a few that truly stood out one was demigod body - grants the body of a demigod to the recipient- demigod body grants +5% to all physical stats +5% to all resistance stats and +5% resistance to damage I was hooked on that one honestly I was always after passive abilities so this one was right up my ally and after I took it it didn't disappear it just changed to demigod body 2 with all of the bonuses doubled so I took the second one and looked for a different boon to take as 10% bonus for every physical stat really included EVERY physical stat and I feared I might rival a horse at the third level if you know what I mean. 
    In the end I put my last boon in Arcane lore hoping that it would give me some good insight into my new arcane potential that and I was starting to look like a body builder on steroids so basically Hercules not a terrible look but there's a limit to how far my clothes could stretch.

   Yeah I'm no god but considering the boosts I received it was fairly significant I'd say though people who were in better physical shape before would probably have higher health than I do now I felt that I was doing pretty decent for a gamer nerd though why the stats were so low I just had to chalk up to being low level as my level rank was just 1. It was time to explore my arcane potential so I started searching for my last boons knowledge on my mind and up it popped after some mental digging. Arcane magic well my boon gave me just enough knowledge to figure out how to cast the most basic of arcane spells arcane bolt it shoots a bolt of raw arcane energy at a target I also learned the arcane blast spell basically an arcane bolt that explodes on impact like a fireball very useful.
     I found out that the path of arcane magic is extremely rare and powerful however it is relatively unexplored simply because few ever achieve gaining the path most people on earth had done a little better than the minimum and unlocked the lowest paths of magic the mind though limited the mind path can be a great battle magic because it's as quick as a thought.

Humanity stands on the brink first a computer virus kills most of technology and then a bio weapon plague kills 80% of humanity the survivors are changed and then enters our mc will he survive and become strong enough to face the horrors of the new world?

Crynn POV

"Is is a common occurrence to leave high-grade gunpowder anywhere," this jar literally reads, 'HIGH GRADE GUNPOWDER -Flammable', quite charming, no brand. "No it isn't," Jill took it up and looked at it, turning it around, looking downwards and upwards, finally she shook her head. "This is illegal gunpowder, no brand, no regulation, no instructions."

"Why would illegal gunpowder be in a supermarket of all places possible," she contemplates for second and then two until something clicked inside her head. "The Preston Gang, they run Raccoon City's underworld, all shops have a connection to them, some raids spanning years have found illegal stashes of weapons, explosives, and blood money in 'legal' shops allover the city, this must be one of them."

Is that some Raccoon City lore right there, cause I remember no gangs in Resident Evil. "At least we could use them," I said before making out of the supermarket into the deathly night, the blue moon seemed almost innocent to everything happening around here. "I'm done here," Jill got out and started heading further down the road into a dead end.

"I've reached the main avenue," Jill said in the radio looking oppositely at the zombies trying to climb the high wall of collapsed cars and failing miserably at every try, stupid zombies ruining my day. "See a big transmission tower? That's the substation, you'll need to circle around through the alley on your right," you mean the burning alley Carlos?

This is bad, the fire's too big, using my liquid nitrogen spray would be very wasteful. But, how conveniently placed inside the alley is a fire hydrant with no fire hose. "Surely a tall drink of Super Agent and Super Cop can put off a few flames," that is a total understatement, if you say that as a few flames than those that mean the Californian wildfire is a burning house!?

"F*ck you!" Jill had to feel offended and cursed, cursing is bad for health everyone don't do that. Carlos chuckled and the line was cut by Jill, "How do you suppose we deal with that?" Jill looked at the flames with resentment and then at the zombies behind the mesh fence. "We could deal wth the zombies first."

I don't want any zombie to successfully break down the mesh fence and take us by surprise, better to blow their heads off first then, we can bring down the fence. I aimed at the head clearly and shot at point blank, splitting it right off. You know, I could just blow off their heads with my shotgun underbarrel.

I approached another zombie and tapped the secondary trigger, a blast of slugs flew from my barrel, totally ending the poor zombie. "What the hell was that," Jill once again, tongue tied at my gadgets, totally jealous, but don't worry, if I can successfully convince her, she could use my weapons.

"This is a shotgun underbarrel for my pistol," I proudly caressed my pistol, I love Kingsman. "Do all agents like yourself wield those guns," she shot down another zombie and asked me in turn. Do they, not really, "Some others prefer rifles and perfume bombs," yeah I still had a Eu De Bombe in my bag that I could use anytime.

"Perfume bombs, that's the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while," I can't wrong her, it does sound absurd. "The zombies have been taken cared of, time to set aside these barriers," I kicked the fence hard enough it toppled effortlessly down the stairway. "I suppose I'll be really relying on you," Jill went down and looked around.

"Watch out, it seems you awoken some fellas," From in front of Jill, 4 zombies came alive on the streets, one thing I hate about these abominations, they like to fake their death and only come alive if someone's near them. Easily though, she shot them all out, I don't recall Jill being such a good shooter in the game, oh wait, I'm the bad shooter.

"R.P.D training must be effective," I observed, to have that accuracy even if the target's as near as 10 foot, is not easy, especially if you're aiming at 4 different targets with each target needing a 3 tap headshot. "We train everyday in S.T.A.R.S, to ordinary folks, it's hell. But to us, it's just another day at the job," thank God I'm born as a business heir and not from a police or military family.

I honestly couldn't imagine the training to even enter as an ordinary soldier. I had an ex-ranger bodyguard once, I've seen him train and it's worse than hell let me tell ya. "How do you train," Jill asked while approaching the diner, opening the door slightly and stretching her gun forward to be ready for any surprises.

"For the initiation, it's as simple as being drowned and getting tied on train tracks, it's gruesome but after that, it's easygoing," she grunted and took the handgun ammo on the counter and proceed to go to the back room. "Blimey! 25 cents for a donut, that's awfully cheap!" Any donut I've eaten cost a minimum of a couple dollars, but this, this is just outrageous.

"It's a 2 inch donut, of course it's cheap," Jill's voice made it here from inside the room, a 2 inch donut, now that makes more sense. "Calian, check this out, another one of the fancy boxes with a red jewel inside it," she held it up closer to the lightbulb, shining gloriously through it, magnificent. "We've got all three now, just to make it back to the station," I searched around and found nothing of use before we got out.

"How convenient, more zombies up front, why am I not surprised," Jill touched her forehead and shot an oil barrel near some scaffolding and exploded the rest of the zombies with it in an expense of a rapidly falling scaffolding, crushing the zombies, preventing them from ever going back up again. "Now that's taken care of."

"I have a feeling we're going through that alley, any opinions," I jokingly remarked pointing my gun at the steel mesh door covering a nearby aisle. "Well, I do know that after this is over, I'm not visiting any more alleys," we both let out a calm laugh, optimism and humor is to be needed in a situation like this.

Now, only to go through another dark, zombified alley.

The more you live, the more you know and as they say, "Death is the Next Greatest Adventure". I can't lie but say it's true, although a great adventure may include getting chased by a dragon. But hey! That's the price you pay for getting to live twice... Right??

A short notice regarding the worlds in this fanfiction, the worlds such as, Harry Potter/The Wizarding World, is not like the movies, I make the worlds have more lore than the movie does, so if things are different like the strongest character isn't the strongest, and if characters that's not supposed to exist in that world (OCs) actually esists in my fanfiction, that's just me making things interesting, and if you like things that are original, meaning no OCs or everything is the same as the originals, then don't like, don't read.

"WHAT ARE YOU TALKING about?" I asked.
"Tru," Ruthie said, her voice tinged with excitement. "You couldn't have aced your tests like you did most of last year in zombie mode, unless you have a super sensor. When I asked you how you did it, you said you picked the answers that felt right. I used to think you had some kind of ESP going on but you never seemed to hear me when I tried to speak to you with my mind."
I didn't know what to be more shocked about, the fact that Ruthie believed I had some psychic power or that she tried to speak telepathically with me. 
"So," said Conrad with awe in his voice. "Are you saying Tru is some kind of lie detector?"
I shook my head in denial but Ruthie kept going. "I think so. Maybe we can do a little supernatural true or false."
Zander raised his eyebrows and tilted up one side of his mouth as if to say, "we might as well try."
"I don't know, guys," I hesitated. "I don't think I can say for sure if something is true just like that." 
"Yes, you can, Tru." Ruthie's unwavering confidence in me almost made me a believer.
"Why don't we try it out?" asked Zander, cocking his head to the side and shrugging. "And as you think about the questions and answers, examine how you feel. Maybe you will notice a difference in a true and false answer."
"I've got a question for you, Tru," said Conrad. "Usemi always have multiple births. Are they twins, triplets, quadruplets, or any of those options?"
"What the freak?" yelped Ruthie. "They always have more than one child at a time? Like a litter?"
Zander and I chuckled. 
"What's your answer, Tru?" asked Conrad.
"Zander already told me. They have twins."
"Oh yeah!" said Zander. He rubbed his chin and said, "How about this? My birthday is 
"A: January twenty-first, B: July first, or C: September fifth."
I closed my eyes and ran through the possible answers in my mind. My temperature gauge wasn't going hot or cold, but it definitely felt warm when I said September fifth in my mind.
"September fifth?" I suggested, weakly.
"Dang! You got it, Tru," said Conrad.
"Oh no! We didn't do anything for you," whined Ruthie.
"It's okay," said Zander with a chuckle. "It was a long time ago."
"Uh. No, it wasn't," said Ruthie. "It's only been a few weeks."
Zander and I blinked at each other. It felt so long ago that he'd first shown up in our school. 
 "How did you do it, Tru?" asked Conrad.
I thought about it before answering. "Um. It's a temperature thing? I think I feel warm and kind of cozy when I think something is right. When it's false I feel cold and ..." I tried to capture the feeling with a word. "Empty. I feel cool and little empty when it's false."
"Awesome! Here's another one," said Conrad excitedly. "How can you kill a usemi in wolf form?
"A. Shooting it with a silver bullet, B. Cutting off its head, C. Stabbing it in the heart, D. None of the above."
Again, I thought about each answer.
"None of the above?" I said with a surprise. Zander smiled. Conrad hooted in the background.
"But why?" I asked. "Do you mean they can't be killed?"
"Oh, they can be killed," said Zander. "But you answered correctly. Usemi have almost impenetrable skin. It's tough in human form, too, but not as strong. A regular bullet wouldn't work (the silver thing is a myth, by the way), and an ax or knife wouldn't get through either."
"But I thought Peter shot a usemi in Tru's backyard," exclaimed Ruthie.
"That was a special bullet," said Zander. "You could choke one, but they are super strong, so don't count on that. It's better to go for their weaknesses. They have some vulnerable areas, though, like their ears, mouth, eyes, and so on. You could stab them through the eye and penetrate their brain."
I made a face. 
"Ew! Gross," said Ruthie.
Zander agreed.
"What's so special about Peter's bullets?" I asked.
"Well, the only things that can pierce usemi skin are the teeth of another usemi or akharu."
"Good gravy!" burst out Ruthie. "Are you saying that Peter's bullets are made from teeth?" 
"Yes," said Zander. 
I grimaced, but Zander just shrugged. "Okay, guys. So, what if I can spot a lie. It's not going to help against the Collector."
"Don't underestimate yourself," piped in Ruthie. 
Zander nodded. "Knowing the truth can be a weapon," he said. "Or it could shield you."
"That reminds me," said Conrad. "Zander told me that you didn't believe the sethian lore he shared with you yesterday. And it's been bothering me all day. Now that we--"
Zander leaned forward, butting in. "Now that we know she's a human lie detector, are you suggesting that we test if our history is wrong?"
I sucked in a sudden breath. Now we were treading on thin ice. I didn't know if I wanted to talk about sethian lore because I was pretty sure Zander's father had made it all up. And the truth about Zander's father, that he was the very Collector we were trying to avoid, was something I didn't want to tell to him yet, fearing that it would change the way he felt about me.
"Exactly," said Conrad.
"I didn't hear about any sethian lore," said Ruthie. Conrad was only too delighted to share it and he wanted to start at the beginning, with Cain and Abel. 
"But explain it in pieces," said Zander. "So Tru can tell us if she thinks it's false."
I bit my lip, already knowing I'd be getting a lot of cold and empty vibes. But I nodded anyway.
Conrad's story-telling skills were much better than Zander's. And Ruthie's gasps and sputters lent a somewhat comical background to the scene, forcing me to concentrate harder to discern the telltale signals that Zander was looking for. When he got to Cain being cursed and changing into a blood-sucking akharu an icy chill ran along my skin. 
When I shook my head, Zander told Conrad and Ruthie it wasn't true. 
"Oh, come on!" complained Conrad loudly. "Some of this has to be true. I mean our whole society is centered around this stuff."
"Wow, Conny!" gushed Ruthie. "The story is riveting. Seriously, this would make a great book!"
Conrad was so disturbed to learn the stories weren't true he didn't even comment on Ruthie's nickname. "What about the curse stuff? Someone better damn well have been cursed!" he muttered.
I thought about the idea of a cursed akharu and how the curse could be passed on to family members. I felt a warmer tingle.
"Wait!" I said. "I think the curse is real, or kind of. I don't know. It just doesn't feel wrong."
"That's a start," said Zander, clenching his hands together. "Let's keep going. Ruthie and Conrad, make sure you are writing this down."
"You know it!" said Ruthie.
"Let's talk about the curses," started Zander. "Are usemi cursed?"
Coolness. "No, I don't think so."
"Are akharu cursed?"
I paused longer. I strange mixture of cold and warm swirled up my back. I pressed my hands into my eyes. No, I couldn't tell.
"I don't know. Part of me thinks so, and part of me doesn't."
"Maybe some akharu are cursed and some aren't," suggested Ruthie.
The coolness fled and warmth spread through my chest. 
"That's it! I think some akharu are cursed." 
"What about sethians?" asked Ruthie.
"Why us?" said Conrad. "We don't have any funky shape-shifting, blood-sucking limitations. We're the ones in charge."
But I was already thinking about the sethians. The heat around my heart tingled and spread like a million warm bubbles, warming me everywhere, from the tips of my fingers to my toes. Were the sethians cursed? Yes!
Zander saw my expression of wonder and his eyes widened. "Actually, Ruthie asked a good question," he said. Conrad made a strangled cry.
As much as I hated to say it, that was exactly what my hot and cold sensors were telling me. "I think sethians are cursed. Sorry," I said.
After a prolonged silence, a despondent whisper floated out from Zander's phone. "I'm cursed?"



Tru Parker didn’t know how ideal her life was until everything normal and safe evaporated in an instant.
