Well before he was her shadow, even before he was out in the forgotten shore, in the first scenes when he first saw her - he was mesmerized. For a boy out of the slums to see (literally) a princess probably pulled emotions he hadn’t felt before (particularly at an important teenage development age). Perhaps he was [fated] to meet her even back then? And then of course their hard fought battles, time spent, and the shadow thing all add on to this complexity.
However… somehow… he had truly been content on the dark island. Sailing through a river of unholy blood on the corpse of a dreadful monster, being pulled into the past by the current — he had been happy on that journey, and happier still to share it with someone he... was fond of. Was fond of so much.

I kinda forgot how frightful these nightmares can be. After all the swarms and hordes, sometimes facing a single entity on the scale of what Sunny Neph and Cassie had to back in the begging is much more terrifying (for them and readers).
The creature resembled a monstrous centipede that was at least a hundred meters long. It was encased in pale chitin… no, not chitin. Bone. The giant centipede seemed to be covered in countless thousands of human skulls, all of them stuck together to form a morbid carapace.

Sunny temporarily borrowed Morgan's Barbow from Saint, and covered Jet as she glided across the wide gap between smokestacks using a flight Memory. She reached the next chimney, then summoned half a dozen sharp throwing stars and did the same for him — Sunny used the Dark Wing to breach the gap, and soon joined Jet.
