I did have an advantage of basic understanding of the language, probably around a 300 word vocabulary and basic understanding of grammar, But it should be doable in half a year. Highly recommend the MIA (mass immersion approach) if you want to start.

I would say its pretty worth it, but it depends on how much spare time you have. It's been 6months and I can read manga easily but I'm struggling with light novels cause there are words every sentence I don't know (spending 2 hours actively studying and 4+ hours watching and listening to japanese without subtitles a day). I recommend the Method if you want to start learning.
