Is this ever stated anywhere in canon? We know that orochimaru used it to a lesser degree of success than kabuto. Why is this? Talent? Orochimaru was definitely more talented than kabuto. The difference between the two was the damage orochimaru did to his soul using the living corpse reincarnation. That's why he couldn't learn sage mode. Most likely why he couldn't utilise impure world reanimation to it's fullest capabilities. If u think about the way the jutsu works I doubt an in depth understanding of the soul is even needed to use it. The sealing formula probably does 99% percent of the work
