Tai Lung is not a good person, and not a bad person either. But there is darkness in him as Oogways said. If I have to say, he is a bad guy trying to be good. It is why he try and justify his actions and claim he is not a villain even when he acts like it. Looking like a hypocrite. But give him time, he has the heart to be better.

Utakata, on the other hand, had nothing going for him. He only was on one mission so far, and even if he had impressed someone by killing two chunin of the Cloud, it didn't answer his question of why he was on this team. The hideous terrain and horrible weather stopped the team from moving fast, so Utakata had plenty of time to think and overthink about his position in the group.

People just really ignore the context or don't even try to understand it. I know cuz I was also like this since the start of my reading 'career' until I matured enough to learn to trust the author and the process unless they are really bad at writing but so far this author is far from it.
[A/N: I received some criticism for the MC's actions recently, keep in mind that he is someone who is *growing* not only is he 17 in mind, he's a 17-year-old who had little to no social interaction and faces tough situations by making stupid jokes to make himself feel better. I don't want to spoil his character but more will be uncovered soon, hope you all enjoy this chapter!
