I always imagined the 'lich self' always acted more how the villain chosen by the bad god would act and is likely just him or Maker using his memories to try and make him relapse and act how he wants while the 'human side' seems to be more like how the hero would act, head strong unyielding to there plans but can cause a situation like what you said
