Though 'Bombay' was used for centuries, many references to 'Mumbai' can be seen in history. One of the first such recordical references was in a 1507 historical text by a Persian author Ali Muhammad Khan where he called the city ‘Manbai’. The local Koli fisher-folk community, who were the first-identified inhabitants of the city, called it ‘Mumbai’, a name which is considered to have been derived from the name of the Koli goddess Mumbadevi.
