Huh? wtf is champion swordsman of the north?
"Kid, Sorce is a coward. But before I took the black, I was Champion Swordsman of the North." Matthew walked up to Leon, holding the long shield in one hand, looking down at him from his full height. "Don't hold back. Come at me with everything you've got."

How would he know if word reached the shadow tower that morning? They’re several days ride apart
"Alliser, so this is the lad who stole the show here yesterday? Word reached even Shadow Tower this morning — Castle Black's got a southern savage mixed in with the recruits." Broken-Hand Corin looked Leon up and down with an easy grin. "Looking at him bounce around like that, he sure doesn't seem like someone who took a dozen cuts."

Do rangers get their own banners? I feel like this author has never watched or read GoT/asoiaf..
"That's the banner of House Halfhand. The man at the front, Qhorin Halfhand. They say he blocked a wildling's battle axe with his right hand and it was hacked down to just the index finger and thumb. So he trained his left hand to wield a sword, and in the end he became even stronger with it than he'd ever been with the right. He's acknowledged by all as the finest ranger."

Aren’t most of the recruits criminals? It’s not like they get to leave after the assessments done..
When would these endless recruit assessments end? Probably when Ser Alliser Thorne finally scraped together a batch of barely passable recruits to hand over to the Old Bear. Only then.

Huh?
Hod saw that the yard was packed with Castle Black residents. Among them were quite a few girls he fancied.

Yeah iirc Jon in the books appeared much smarter than the Jon in the tv series
Leon racked his brain but could not fathom how Jon's mind worked so meticulously. In a situation shifting by the second, Jon had already arranged his escape route down to the last detail.

Not sure if you already fixed this in later chapters, but it would be good to separate the dialogue into different paragraphs when different characters speak
"Yeah, don't worry," I replied. "We'll hold the line here." Morgan gave a short nod.

That number seems high, unless you’re counting weekend warriors. As far as I know only 0.5% of American adults are active duty. Of course if you lump in rotc and citizen soldiers then that number could be way higher, but those demographics wouldn’t actually have any idea about a soldiers life; most of them are wannabes
He nodded knowingly. "Soldier habits die hard."

How messed up is it that you can sign up to fight and die but are still too young to drive or drink?
"I was," I said simply. "A long time ago."

Yep it was pure scam. Btw the teacher is still there. He’s a researcher on tenure. Part of their agreement is that they have to teach a certain number of credits in addition to research to keep their tenured position. The school was too cheap I guess to hire real teachers and just dumped the responsibilities on their researchers who hated it
It was like university: the material was there, but whether you enjoyed learning or passed the course often depended on the professor.
