So I read all the way to the end, and the MC has evolved into a better person than I had initially predicted. This novel is worth reading, which was what I was initially expecting when I saw the high rating.

There wouldn't be a never-ending pile of assignments, there would be no need to worry about surviving, and best of all, he wouldn't have to stress about finding excuses to ask his parents for money. There was plenty of time, as well as plenty of girls…

Yeah, cancer seems to run on both sides of my family. Not sure if all of its genetics or partially lifestyle choices.

"Boys are indeed different from girls. You'll have to take care of your family, so of course, you need to know your way around. Drinking, smoking, being good with words, and making money—that's what makes a real man!"

I get the feeling the original author was a teenager when he started writing this

Wang Yan was young and fearless; he had already recognized the fact that he would have to rely on himself, so he set aside his thoughts and emotions and started making a plan.

His family doesn't sound as poor as I initially expected. At worst, they're in the lower class bracket; but not to the degree of needing welfare.

After dinner, everyone had plans—Xizi excused himself and went to play billiards with the village head, Laowang went to play mahjong, and Wang Yan's mom, Wang Xiufang, left for one of her square-dancing sessions.

Even if that was $5.00, it doesn't seem that expensive. Even for the small ones the size of a bowling ball.

"He left five watermelons with me and went back in a huff. Did you know that, after passing through the hands of the dealers, each watermelon would be able to fetch five yuan at the premium fruit stores?"

normal people get stepped on if we go by this novel's premise

'Wow, I really am average in all aspects. Not one aspect has fallen below the average, but none of them are considered Excellent either.'

wow...so average is barely passing if we go by the U.S. academic grading scale. Well now we know that his stats are likely a direct reflection of his performance in school.

Sixty points were average, 70 points and above were classified Excellent, 80 points and above would be classified Genius, and 90 points and above would be classified Super Genius.

I can't believe he actually had to contemplate what that meant

After pondering for what seemed like forever, he finally figured out what that meant—he would no longer have to worry about picking out a watermelon that wasn't sweet.

So he's below average in all aspects if average is 100

MC is limited to his tiny perception of the world. He sees the world and his "future" with the mind of a child. Definitely hasn't experienced adulting in spite of his supposed "hardships." He developed insecurities because of his family circumstances, which let him see how ugly society can be; however, he didn't do anything to break out of the caste that he was born in. Before he got the system, he was just another person who complained about how unfair life is. Now he's already shaping up to be another one of those "rich kids" that he previously despised. His nature/behavior does not seem like the type that would better the world. He seems more like the type that would give money to someone he knows, and then go about his merry way thinking about how different he is from those other "rich kids" but doesn't really do anything more than that. He may get to the point where he has more money than he can reasonably spend, and still not think to improve the overall livelihood of those that are like how he and his parents were. Of course, that's not uncommon at all. In fact, I'd say the MC (base) is a very common type of person you can find IRL (full of insecurities, selfish, and likes to blame others before themselves). I'm kinda hoping that I'm making too many inferences about the MCs character development (or lack thereof) and that he'll be an okay person (not cringey and deathstare inducing) further into the novel.
