It's the author being lazy is what it is. If you _specifically_ set your story in Northern Europe you should at least put in a minimum of thought and/or research on regional differences to your own locality. Bamboo is a mainly tropical plant not native to Northern Europe and grows poorly when introduced because of the frequently harsh winters. You weave baskets out of stuff that is dirt cheap because it's plentyfull and fast growing where you happen to live. In Northern Germany, Scandinavia and the rest of the Northsea and North Atlantic coast that has historically been willow.
Over a dozen young men were carrying bamboo baskets as they walked along the beach, looking for spoils left behind by the tide after the storm was over. There were all kinds of conches, shells, and shrimp. Occasionally, one could even spot a fish flopping against the sore.

Because the plot needed him to.
Zheng Yang was puzzled as to why his father had never bothered to build the spirit vessel himself, considering the old man had had the ritual diagram, instead opting to teach Zheng Yang all that was related to the crafting of such a vessel.

From the famous northern european mercury berry bush! It is typically found growing right next to the copses of Scandinavian rubber trees so ubiquitous on north Atlantic isles.
His materials included mercury, natural gum, plant saps, animal bodily fluids, and even powders ground from specific shells and minerals. It had taken him over a month to gather all of them from the island.

Okay this novel just got a whole nother level of stupid. And it was already plenty dumb.

That thing that Zheng Yang called a boat had a flat rear and pointed front. It was only two meters long, and the widest part of the thing was only about 70 to 80 centimeters in length.

A sampan? You're taking a sampan out into the North Atlantic?
Zheng Yang spent hours hammering and sawing away. By sundown, the pile of scraps in the compound was almost all gone, and in its place was a very, very crude-looking sampan instead.

So you have a small, isolated, minimal surpluss island community where every able-bodied person from the adolescents to the elderly pitches in to put food on the table, but our MC has been just futzing about for an entire month contributing nothing, and people were cool with that. Sure, Mr.Author, whatever you say.
Zheng Yang didn't go out to hunt for seafood like the other people his age. Instead, he spent his time knocking around the wreckages, as if he were looking for something.

I'm not sure if sad is the right word, bitter sweet perhaps. For one we never get a conclusive answer whether Sai is real (insofar as as a ghost can be considered real), or just an imaginary friend created by young boys mind. In a way it doesn't really matter, because at its heart Hikaru no Go is a story about transformation. Hikaru, Sai, and Akira as well, all start out 'stuck' in some form, and only by learning to let go of their individual obsessions for the sake of others, growing up both literal- and figuratively, are they able free themselves and move forward. It's melancholy at times, but ultimately hopeful and inspirational.
Butler Chen glanced at him with a smile. "Have a seat. Do you know how to play Go?"

"I'll go and ruin the gathering…" Luo Hong squinted his eyes. Although he was not invited, he decided to ruin it. It was the standard act of an antagonist, and he believed he would certainly get a ton of Sin Level from it!

Seriously? That's what it took for this realization to penetrate his meat head skull?!
With the little manual in hand, Zhao Donghan realized that Butler Chen was the one who was protecting Luo Hong.

"Buy 'Butler Chen'. Now with 100% less professional bias!"
"Give this Sword Qi Manual to the young lord when the time is right. Amongst all cultivation, only the sword is unrivaled. And remember to tell the young lord that the path of cultivation is dangerous. A slight misstep and everything will fall beyond repair."

Poor sods, they're doomed!
Or he could find an evil organization, join them, and do bad things with them.

Flag planted. Hard!
"I'm going to be an antagonist to increase the Sin Level, right? How hard can it be?"

*nods sympathetically* Ah yes, waking up reeking of foul effluvia in an unfamiliar place without recollection of how you got there, or whose blood that is covering your hands. We've all been there, bro.
He instinctively took a deep breath, but his nose and throat felt painful as if they were being burned by fire. His philtrum felt wet, and it smelled like blood.

But is it 'fully functional'?
His jade-transformed body felt no different from a normal physical mortal body.

Guilty? Really!?
Zhang Dongyun felt guilty as he sorted this out.

The damage he caused to chinese culture just to cling to a few more years in power was incalculable, and that does not even take into account the off-the-scale amount of loss of life and sheer human misery he was directly responsible for throughout his reign. And the true irony of it all is that despite having been a bona fide curse on the country who made the worst decision at practically every turn people in China today still consider him a great national hero.
No wonder a great man once said 'the more the knowledge, the more the disarray." Xu Mao Ping was a textbook example of this quote. (translator's note: the man who worded this quote was Mao Ze Dong prior to the Cultural Revolution. This saying was eventually a popular political slogan for prohibiting education of the bourgeoisie in fear that they will become capitalist roaders.)
