Mallory's voice trembled, a mixture of shock and disbelief coating her words. "D—Did you kill the coachman?" her eyes wide as they fixed on the lifeless form lying disturbingly still. "I only meant for us to stop him, not... not end him!"

He flashed a self-satisfied smile, as if granting Mallory permission to bask in his glory. Meanwhile, Mallory fought the urge to roll her eyes and instead chose to take a deep, calming breath.

"Sergeant Gruger, I don't remember you being the commissioner," the commissioner said with a pointed look. He immediately turned to Jane and agreed, "Permission granted. I'm expecting you to solve the case quickly because you are the detective in this case. Otherwise, we'll have to transfer the investigation to someone else."
