"At a wrong place, at a wrong time" - This is probably what I would describe the status of this Novel. Dark Blood Age is a novel that's unique in a sense that it tries to become something greater than the format that is it written in - "web novel" - usually allow. The novel takes itself super seriously, implements famous literature gothic literature, feudatory chinese philosophies, ancient myths and archetypes. For example, the main character starts off as a normal white collar worker, but during the progress of the storyline he gains more and more qualities of a "byronic hero" - which included considerable level of intelligence, self-criticism, self-destructive, loner,... Unlike other reviewer opinions, the side characters have a significant level of polishing to them as well. To illustrate, in chapter 244, the story direct to a tragedy of a father have to choose which of his 2 children to let go into the hands of a bunch of cannibals. The situation itself is extremly similar to the origin of the main antagonist of the famous manga "Monster" of Urasawa Naoki. In "Monster" the main antagonist reveals that the very action of choosing one of the children of his mother is one of the reason turning him unable to feel emotion - thus, making him a interesting antagonist. However, in this book, we can see that this option is justified due to the cruel circumstances of the world, and only by choosing to let go of one of the children is the only way to create a living opportunity to the other. The decision of the father also reflect the reality of *** discrimination of the china's society. The archetypes, myths and other inspiration that the novel borrows is not something "new" or "groundbreaking", but they are quite perfectly blent together. The stakes and pacing of most of the arcs are handled quite well - there is a time limit for everything so the main character can not just stay there and grinding, there are hard and emotional decision that the main character has to make, there are a good amount of logical twists that were hinted along the progression of the story, an the dark and cruel theme of the world is pretty much persistent. Turn-offs: The power scale of the story is one of the turn-off factor for many readers. Simply because this novel does not target readers who is looking for power fantasy/ power trip type of story. Cranking up the power way to fast will hurt all the other elements of the story so I guess that why the power progress is quite slow. Another usual turn off is the extremly dark and cruel theme of the story, but then again, it's like when somebody complains that "berserk" is "too dark" they are not the target audiences. In the end, I just feel that despite this novel is a fantastic work and have a fairshare of fanbase in china, the average international web novel readers don't really fond of this type of serious story, which may explain why so many of them reading this novel, expecting trium** and cool stuffs that the main character can do and then left unsatisfied and disapointed when they did not get what they expect - your average quick, cheap fun.
