Okok... In easier terms ( also get from Wikipedia):
If the number is even, divide it by two.
If the number is odd, triple it and add one.
Keep going and see where it leads you..

n = 12, one gets the sequence 12, 6, 3, 10, 5, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1.

Have always respected the depth of knowledge Author sama has shown on the real life personalities mentioned in this book and how he has integrated them seamlessly into the MC's story. This chapter thou is an insult to me as a Nigerian. Am surprised that you said his socks was on his table you should have just said he was a buffoon that didn't wear socks to class and worked from a dungeon filled with dust and cobwebs.
Truth is I don't know what could be more racist than your half-baked thoughts on what you think goes on in Nigeria.

These novel showed the black side of doctors. Doctors have to swear the Hippocrates Oath indeed, but who are really want to save lives are not that much---most of them became doctors with money in mind. They aren't bad people, thinking like that, it's just the reality in this society. So, that drunk doctor is not an unrealistic character, on the contrary, i think it is just stating the way that character live. He can't do more surgeries, so why not let someone take over and bear the responsibility? It won't harm him in any possible way. He's also get the money from that surgery, being the primary assistant.
