Idk, I think that's his whole charm, what makes him compelling and a likeable protagonist. He remains cheerful and optimistic even in the face of adversity, hiding his more fragile heart beneath the surface. His earnest demeanor draws people toward him, and his goofy knuckleheadedness is part of his charm. He's one of the very few who are consistently and honestly kind, in a very headstrong way, in his cruel world. The story would for sure be very different if he wasn't like this, and I'm not sure it would be better. I don't really think this narrative leaves the original with quite enough credit, but that's just my opinion.

And if that product could be sold for cheap and helped in saving the lives of hundreds of Americans then the amount of goodwill that he will earn from these people wasn't a trifling matter.
