you mean besides justice? maybe because when you make your bed with dogs, you catch their fleas. By protecting him, the guardians are making more people question there abilities to rule, guide or make decisions for the mere mortals. some of there actions are why the master is doing what he is doing. you could even say balkor did what he did because guardians have made bad decisions running their territories. at some point someone is going to get powerful enough to push them off the top of the totem pole and it's going to hurt.

yeah except they haven't shown any ability to even be worth playing that level of grand strategy.
In this way, those keeping an eye on the rebels would underestimate them more, thinking that their leaders were trash for getting rid of a talent like Leonel for short term benefits. And, at the same time, they would be able to secretly bring Leonel to their side and gain yet another hidden trump card.
