Maybe that's acceptable to some. "I can't have a serious relationship" is not the same as "I don't want a serious relationship". One implies something outside of his control is stopping him from committing to a relationship and the other lets her know he wants no serious attachments and prefers something like FWB's.

What ends up happening is that she assumes he's saying it won't work out because he's a hero and he goes along with it and uses it as the excuse for why he might just up and leave instead of doing the adult thing and telling her he only wants something casual. So now he's once again leading her along.
