I think he said Alex was a good guy last time around, meaning Alex wasn't a nobody. I assume Alex would have been seriously injured and likely out of commission for far longer, perhaps making him take the game less seriously as he didn't win a way to live on it. Forcing Alex to slow grind into being stronger. David couldn't have known how important that helping him was, unless they were super close and it came up, but it's doubtful. It does seem he knew him in some way from before, though, and trusted him.
"Nah. I just didn't want to stand by while a poor chap was getting his ass whooped. No need to thank me. I would do the same for anyone." David explained, touring the penthouse.

I understand the need to get a reference to something, it helps with imagery and can connect the reader to an idea, but honestly adding the actual name and not a clever spin on it really draws away from the individuality of the story. Where I do feel it has a lot of originality, these spots find it lacking. Even something like HallaBrawl ya know?
