I think the fact that it is the specific series of events strung together that bars it from becoming a subgenre; it's not like it's a particular setting or vague storyline that this novel is taking inspiration from, its specific plot points and events. In my eyes, that is a rip-off; though from what I remember the novel got much better later on, it's been quite a while since I've read it though.

you're right, they aren't themes exclusive to MVS but, it's the line-up of every single one of those themes in a particular order that makes it a rip-off. I'm sure it will deviate later down the story line but for now, it's a rip-off, not a bad one though.

I feel like this is the wrong way to approach a story like this. The author has been mentioning racism the entire story and yet the main character judges everyone based on race. I'm not just talking about the female lizard-girl, the MC has been mentioning on multiple occasions how much he hates specific races like hobgoblins, orcs, goblins, etc. If you are trying to create a novel where you tackle the idea of racism and its negative impact on society, even as a background plot, this is for sure not the way to go about it. Especially with the way the MC is experiencing racism and then proceeding to racially discriminate afterward, it just seems disingenuous. But I love the story idea and will continue following it through, just some thoughts on the story so far.
