The march resumed not long after. Riftan's words kept playing in her head as she rode after the soldiers. She now knew that he understood why she had been forced to leave and that she had made the right decision. Still, the fact that she had been able to walk away had wounded him deeply, and their current circumstances were certainly not helping to mend the rift.

Look, I get it, you have an unshakable hatred for Maxi, and you're entitled to your opinion. I have a very different opinion of her and her actions, and that's okay, too. It's all in an individual's interpretation. Take care, and perhaps try to look at the events of the story with an open mind. Maybe a fresh read will show you a different perspective.

They just need to both bend a little. Maxi is (or was) trying to compromise, but Riftan's such a "my way or the highway" guy. He needs to back off and trust Max.
Though she ran into Riftan several times, she gave him the cold shoulder. Riftan had taken to ignoring her as well after learning that she had gone ahead and enlisted. A storm brewed whenever they were in the same place, and the heavy atmosphere seemed to surprise even Sejuleu. The Livadonian commander had taken to treading carefully whenever he was around them.

In one fluid motion, he lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it. Not used to such courtesy, Maxi looked uncomfortable. She quickly smoothed her expression when she saw Riftan marching toward them.
