I started reading post change, so I am not sure what it was like before. However, in it's current form I think the story reads quite well and is very interesting.

Is it really a good idea to invite a Miller to Dry City. She is from one of the top families of the Kingdom. So, she could accidently "spill the beans" about Dry City.

Smart man! Too many leaders fall into that trap.

Didn't Downs already meet Nela during the war? Downs was the one against her plan and I thought they talked at the end of the meeting.

"And this must be Lady Burgess. It is my pleasure to finally make your acquaintance. I have heard many a thing about you, my lady." After having greeted Braydon, Downs did the same for Nela. Whilst she technically did not have a title herself, she was the sole heir to Duke Burgess. Now that Cinar was once again a very important noble nobody could ignore her presence.

Ha

"The King? No. The rest of them? For the most part, I don't care." Braydon said but still straightened out his clothes anyway. He did not fancy a broken leg. Not for a stupid reason like this.

Not bad for Downs. He is now 4th in seniority behind Burns, Burgess, and Ethan (forgot his last name) who are all now Dukes.

"Earl Downs, for your valour in leading on the battlefield and service in advising the King, your title will be elevated to Marquess and all of the lands under your current purview will be merged into your current fiefdom." If all of the previous rewards given out had been somewhat expected, this was one that not many people saw coming. It was well known that some of the more powerful nobles would occupy the lands of their rivals after a scuffle. Braydon had done it himself. But it was taken to another level amongst the more independent minded lords of the northeast. And Downs did not become one of the most powerful lords there by peaceful means alone. Along with his own fief, the lands that he occupied could already make a small Duchy. And the King had just recognised that.

Man the MC is like half a Noble. He only likes the fighting part and the getting lands part. He completely misses the importance of relationships (especially in a time before social media and mass printed word), and the long-term planning/development part (Which is something most people ignore or only concentrate on extreme cases like Tywin Lannister. However, legacy and developing your lands/titles is a big part of being a Noble)

"Most of them you can ignore but that does not mean that there are not a few notable exceptions. A number of guild leaders or important merchants have honorary titles too, you know." Rhydian decided not to mention that many of the merchants had paid through the nose for their titles. Braydon already had a bad opinion of them. No need to give more reasons.

I am not sure this would of worked out for Ryder. Forging a river is no joke, especially large fast moving ones. Plus Nela was actively working for holes in the Defense to protect her Dad. It is more likely Ryder would of got caught mid-crossing and get his Van destroyed and most of his Middle killed or routed. Leaving only his rear to escape with. Which Burn would happily hunt down and slaughter. In the end Burn would go to the table with the King. Since he seems to have more fun causing trouble than actually trying to get the crown.

Once he had been able to find a way to cross the river and had been about to rain on the King's parade, Duke Ryder made possibly the greatest mistake that he could have. If the rest of the unfortunate events of the war had been out of his control, this was entirely his own fault. He had decided that instead of following through and getting rid of the King once and for all, he should turn around and stop Duke Burn from getting the aid of the Twin Duchies.

Though Ryder would definitely use and throw them away. I think the other suggestion from earlier was probably best in hindsight, just leave the army become a bachelor knight and find a new liege.

"Oh, you can hardly call me a traitor. If I recall correctly it was your liege who agreed to help Duke Burn in his efforts to usurp my throne. And whom did you ask to save you?" The King was quite frankly amazed that they had not thought of this when they were asking for his allegiance. If he had been in their position, he would have gone to Duke Ryder.

If the MC were a spy, he would be the best actor in the world. Because his whole personality and actions basically scream not spy and not cunning at all.

"I will go and rest as well." Rhydian said just loud enough for the King to hear. He knew exactly what the King had meant by 'people to see'. They both knew full well that Rhydian would tell Braydon about the things that were about to happen before he started making orders. And he was not about to pretend like it was something that he did not do. If the King had truly been worried that Braydon was a spy, then he would never have let Rhydian be in charge of the army in the first place.

Ha, now this is a bit different than I thought. I thought the other Duke took him out. The King is walking a fine line here.

The King had been making sure to keep his involvement in the death of Duke Rotleach and under the table agreement with Duke Tetland hidden. So much so that he had not even told his closest supporters. And now, if he played his cards right, he might be able to benefit even more than before. Though if he acted rashly, he might end up estranging his relations with Duke Tetland before he could stand on his own.
