That is an overstatement. Even if he did, how much information did he retain? He gave up adoption went with the flow and worked at a zoo because of the pay. To me that at least describes the mc as someone who doesn't take his studies seriously. I would imagine him to be closer to someone living paycheck to paycheck without ambition. From my experience, people like that only pay attention to basic arithmetic. Not because they lack the capacity to understand more, rather because it was unnecessary.
