I've seen and played a few vr games where you look down at a character from an 3rd person or omniscient view. Some examples being Demeo, or Moss to name a few. It's strange but not much different than looking at a board game, just with more moving parts.
Without the omniscient view, the players would not be able to control the state of the entire battlefield, and it would be extremely difficult for the players to cooperate with each other. Coupled with the shrinking of the player base, the fun of the game would be lost.
