He was chosen to protect Sam because of the information that connects Sam to the All Spark, in regards to the location of all spark, but now after this conversation Bumblebee realized there was much more about this boy than meets the eye. His technology was so much advanced compared to anything Bumblebee had encountered here on Earth.

this was a retcon by the 4th or 5th movie

'What did he just say?' Dowan's eyes widened in shock. He looked at James, who wore an easygoing smile with a hint of something sinister. 'Did he figure something out?' Dowan trembled, hearing James' words echo in his mind. It was as if James could see through him like an open book. Dowan was terrified that James might somehow be onto the system itself. But he calmed down slightly, realizing James was only speculating. There was no way he knew about the system. Still, Dowan couldn't shake how scary James was. What made him terrifying wasn't his size or strength, it was his mind. Those words, so casually spoken, felt as if they were undeniably accurate.

Sam nodded, feeling a small wave of relief. The last thing he needed was for anyone to catch sight of what was about to unfold. He pedaled harder as the entrance to the quarry came into view. The place was vast, barren, and isolated a perfect spot for what Bumblebee was likely up to. His mind raced with thoughts of the future, of the battle to come, but he couldn't let his knowledge of it all slip. He had to play the role of a clueless teenager, at least for now.
