I think you also should introduce printing press. The printing press is a key factor for the printing revolution resulting in Renaissance, later developing into liberalism and nationalism. The first printing press was created in this era and by Johannes Gutenberg. I believe Gutenberg's printing press is doable in the story and it is very necessary for the development of Byzantines and humanity.
