it's more of a 'payment for services rendered' kind of thing. if something happens to eragon and cedric helps him out, he gets paid. not that he needs to guard him indefinitely in exchange for a single vial of blood. cedric would never take a deal like that

Their parley ended a few hours before dawn, separating while nursing their thoughts. After explaining the ancient language's ability to enforce oaths - and encouraging her to confirm the matter with Brom – Saphira was no less eager to seal the deal than he.

They weren't working with pure silica. Anyway, the point is they have no clue about nuclear operations in the first place. Even if they did, the energy needed to fission silica into carbon is a lot, and then to arrange those carbon atoms into a diamond lattice.

Yet, even if the energy issue was set aside, there was the problem of volume. The volume-ratio of sand to diamond was very far from being one-to-one. However, there was no mention in the novel of her using mountains of sand to condense the amount of diamond necessary for Brom's entire tomb.

'studying the ancient language properly and dilligently' means giving up wild magic so Brom can teach him said ancient language.

The old rider secretly wished one of his apprentice's spells would blow up in his face. Not enough to injure him badly, and not out of malice, but as a means for him to learn a little caution and humility. If something like that did happen, perhaps he'd be able to convince Cedric to give up such reckless pursuits, to study the ancient language properly and diligently.

That seems to be the general consensus x'D

He chuckled tiredly to himself. It was ironic—the whole reason for this journey was Eragon's training. Pressured by circumstances, Brom was accelerating it beyond the norm for a rider. Yet, when it came to his red-haired apprentice, he was doing everything he could to slow him down.

That's correct, but because he doesn't have anyone to train his mind against, he uses the life drain technique's 'side effect' to train by trying to keep their suffering from influencing him. It's mentioned in a later chapter.

Certainly, using it on humans or animals was rather unethical, but to the elves, even using it on plants and insects was too much. Cedric didn't think of himself as the evil wizard type, willing to do anything for power, but seriously…?
