This is what I think The king left to lead his troops to hunt down a smaller army that was invading and heading to the capital meanwhile the king had sent the majority of his troops to deal with the army of 70000 that where also invading. As to why he moved out instead of staying in the capital is probably because the invading army if 50000 was destroying villages and food resources that the capital needed.
