I don't have to wonder about why that is. Despite how awful Vanessa believes Ivan to be, he wasn't threatening her life at the time. Even if Vanessa isn't aware of how this ability of hers works, anything less than a threat to her life will obviously keep the murderous acts of others' shadows at bay.

Vanessa is not someone who could kill so easily. We both know that. Otherwise, Ivan would be gone already. He was already confronted with his shadow downstairs, and it didn't kill him like the shadows of the cartel members.
