Vanessa is not someone who could kill so easily. We both know that. Otherwise, Ivan would be gone already. He was already confronted with his shadow downstairs, and it didn't kill him like the shadows of the cartel members.

She flinches, but I know his shadow isn't bothering her right now. I may not have realized I was shielding her before, but I feel it clearly now. It is extending like a part of myself that embraces her in a way no one else ever could. If the shield could slice through Ivan's hand, it would.

Finally, Ivan's little red car appears in the mirror, and I brake hard. Luka curses more despite the fact that he is very much alive and unharmed, and I jump out of the SUV. Vanessa is standing by the side of the road, arms curled around herself while Ivan leans on the driver's door like he doesn't have a care in the world.

"Yeah. The doc gave me clearance," Ivan says with a wide grin. He is loving this, and I'm not sure why. Is it just because he gets to see Dominik uncomfortable? The more I am around these two, the more I wonder if Ivan doesn't just love poking Dom for the fun of it—kind of like poking a bear to see what will happen.

"Witch," he says with little emotion. It is spoken as a matter of fact, and one that he does not seem prejudiced about. "She was a very gifted witch. And well known. Her whole family was apparently that way, but I didn't concern myself with it at the time. My brother kept her out of our world, so I rarely saw her. He should have lived with us. I don't have to wonder about why that is. Despite how awful Vanessa believes Ivan to be, he wasn't threatening her life at the time. Even if Vanessa isn't aware of how this ability of hers works, anything less than a threat to her life will obviously keep the murderous acts of others' shadows at bay.
