Obviously, the Brood Tenders had insisted the box and all its contents be given a thorough inspection and acid wash to ensure it was properly clean before reluctantly agreeing. They didn't want to put up barriers for the new champion so early in her development, but they weren't really comfortable with anything being brought into the brood chamber.

This particular trade mission had only just arrived on business from the Satrap. He'd decided to invest in some rare gemstone ventures within the Empire of Stone, and Eran had not long ago disembarked her ship, only to find that Tunnel Ball had even spread here, where hatred for the ants ran high. After Anthony had rocked an entire mountain, they really didn't like the Colony. They still bought a surprising amount of cheap, ant-produced goods, though.

In the case of real life ants; only the ants who are born to fertilize queens are male while both and queens and their sterile workers are all classified as female. While the queens are pretty clear-cut; the reason the workers are considered female is specifically because they also came from the same fertilized eggs as the queens and have ovipositors(which were repurposed into stingers). Wether or not a fertilized ant egg develops into a queen is actually decided in the larval stage based on hormonal conditions and how much they’re fed. But since all dungeon monsters seem to exclusively reproduce asexually I guess the Formica Sapiens might technically be sexless.

Is it just me or does the topic of Anthony’s previous life as a human feel like a trans allegory? I dunno if it’s intentional or not but whenever Anthony or his sisters talk about it they give the same vibe as a close family trying to be supportive of their obviously genderqueer sibling who hasn’t come out yet.
