While that is true from one perspective, from his it is not. He has power that he never really asked for or wanted. Riftan never espired to be a nobleman or to be elite and powerful. Everything he has ever done has been to get close to Maxi. He is only been gaining power now to pass the time (sink himself into work so he doesn’t feel). and to take revenge on the duke. It isn’t like he is enjoying his position. I do think he should forgive Agnes but he isn’ t in a place to do that right now. Also let’s face it, he doesn’t really like Agnes before, so now he likes her even less.
Agnes bit her lip. She had known that sending Maximilian to the Mage Tower to prevent the trial would inevitably earn his rancor. What she had not anticipated was how long his resentment for her would persist.

I think in the side story it talked about him being 13 so if it has been 5 years he is only 18 or 19 so a young father and husband. He might be younger, as I can’t remembe when they mentioned it.
"Indeed, Sir Riftan," the prince replied, extending a hand in welcome. "I was but a child when we last saw each other. Thank you for coming all this way."

100%. I am not trying to be insensitive to people in bad relationships, I think there are times you need to leave but for good. I don’t see how leaving is going to magically help their relationship? Yeah maybe if you were leaving to clear your head for a few days or even a month or two but 3 years?

Sorry I know this comment was from months ago but I loved your comment and 100% agree. I have been so surprised by the comments on here about their toxic relationships and how manipulative Riftan is. Is Riftan being totally being overprotective and obsessive right now, yes absolutely. He also just saw his wife lose their baby and almost kill herself during the war, and then found out her father has been abusing her for years. Give the man alittle time to get his act together. Their relationship is flawed of course, but they do love each other so they would grow together and figure it out. I understand Maxi’s feelings , that she needs to go but there are other ways she could learn to love herself other than crushing her husbands soul. How exactly does 3 years of separation suddenly make you realize your mistakes and fix your relationship? I am not mad at Maxi, I just think their were other choices she could have made.
"Don't think for a minute that you're leaving for my sake," Riftan continued. "I never wanted this. You're leaving… for you."

Stealing something valuable like the king’s heart. Love this!
As she put her hands in her pocket, she came in contact with a paper. She grabbed it and pulled it out. It was the application that Uncle Benedict gave her. Opening the letter, she looked at the part of the salary she would get once she became a Royal Guard. The offer enticed her but this was too risky. If she got caught, it would end very badly. But then she thought of the endless possibilities and opportunities to steal something valuable from the castle.

I don’t think it is that, he is just scared to death to lose her. He knows it would kill him. He goes about it all wrong don’ t get me wrong, I don’t condone his attacks and anger. I think he is fighting against every possible impulse in his nature with Maxi, all he wants to do is grab her and get her as far away from danger as possible, it is self pres ervation for himself.
"I am at my limit," he growled into her ear. "How much more must I tolerate? Didn't that gruesome scene in the cave knock some sense into you? Or does your stubbornness come from your failure to understand just how much danger we are in?"
