I never get why they even learn so many spells, i mean one needs to learn to use them by instinct in battle. If u had a 100 types of defense spell, attack would hit u before u could choose 1 and use it.

I think you could make him mature by characterization. In first part, harry thought snape wanted to steal the sorcerer's stone but was proved wrong, but even then in 2nd part he's always prejudiced towards snape, and never even asks him why he's always picking on him Also add some homour like percy jackson, or maybe some elements of it too. Personally I lke PJ better.
