I think this is a great idea, it shows character growth. right now he has been pretty static which is bad, all good stories require the MC to be organic and to grow as a person. i have gotten sick of all these books that have an MC who is the same from chapter 1 to 1000. so what if he's stronger or smarter or has a bunch of women or money. if the character itself never changes then the story is trash.
As for Sofie and Zoe, he had already thought of abandoning them since he knew the next part of his journey was too much for them. If he had the power, he might lend Zoe a hand before entering the path of legend.
