I really like this story, but this is starting to be too unbelievable. She has no idea of the basics of s*x and natural birth control, yet she lives among pirates and her mother is a healer. Mason has only done procreative s*x with her? No foreplay? The man was a cad and likely surrounded by people who were very concerned about potential illegitimate heirs.

This reminds me of how Delaney was awestruck the first time she went to the Pirate Kings's house.
As they walked, Ilona couldn't stop her eyes from shooting from one thing to the next, taking in paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and every other wonder that hung on these walls. She also noticed on the floor beneath them a long, scarlet carpet with golden stitching, looking more luxuriant than anything on the floors at her father's estate.

With a sigh, Maxi trailed Anette into the communal workshop. It was a space mainly used by the novices of Nome Hall. Inside, the first thing she saw was the huge furnace spitting out flames. The Godric brothers were busy tossing charcoal and firewood into the chute. A man, who was fairly tall for someone of the Umri tribe, vigorously worked the bellows beneath the structure. Next to the furnace, four other novices of short stature were hammering away at a steel plate. They all seemed to be working on a magical device.
