I think it's quite reasonable, given the state of his mind is, well... Quite pathetic, atleast, for now... Plus, he also grew up in a poor environment and in dire straits. So... Combining all of these factors, it's reasonable enough why he would want the other soldier to die. In conclusion, his way of thinking was affected by the poverty he suffered. If anything, the MC's way of reasoning is atleast, quite realistic. (not outstanding nor exceptional but realistic. )
