This is wrong. The reason people used to bite gold coins to see if they're real is because gold is a soft metal so a bite would leave a mark on it. Of course, you can also see if they're fake, since counterfeit gold coins are usually made of lead which is much softer then gold, leaving a larger mark/dent.
He immediately bit the gold coin and then tried to bite it. Suddenly his expression changed. The gold coins that were trying to be broken by him could not be broken by him. The coin was so hard it was as if he was trying to break the metal using his teeth.
