If you paid attention during the academy arc, you would know that the system provides information in a very complicated language, and the auto-translate leaves out a lot of nuance. So it probably used a word that includes both direct falsehoods and refusing to answer, and this gets translated to "lie" because English doesn't have a single word that fits.
...And Sunny too, of course, but no one had to know that.

Pause can fully drain his XPE in 10 minutes. That's a long time in combat, but not much for crossing town (without even the help of public transportation, since it's all frozen). Technically he could get around this by abusing save/load to regenerate XPE and then starting another pause, but this would involve over 3 hours of waiting for every 10 minutes of walking, and he really hasn't shown that kind of patience. Plus, there's the risk that after all that travel the store ends up having a really long line which even his powers can't make fit into his schedule.
No, wait, the exams are pre-set to be given to us at the end of every month...so then the bad timing was on the part of Delectables. Well, as a last resort, I could go try the limited item tomorrow morning, and after I'm done, I'll use Load to go back in time and come here to take the exams. There was something unsatisfactory about going for that option though, but it was hard to explain.

False dichotomy: he can go with the surrender and still try the battle with only 50% XPE if he wants. This will result in 10 minutes less waiting since he doesn't pay the loading tax an extra time.
Alternatively, I could just surrender the duel, wait a few hours, and then use Load once my XFE is fully recharged, but...waiting around for that long would likely be tedious as hell, plus the idea of surrendering, even if it was something that would be undone, wasn't very appealing.

According to my calculations, if he hadn't tried to be clever the enemy could have cleared the front cards with 45 HP remaining (on the fire elemental) even assuming perfect play by the MC. That's a big enough lead that even the superior C rank (stats in a couple chapters) would still lose.
