I'm not saying write everything down but just the gist of the story like the words "up, old man, ellie, Russell, dog, paradise falls, balloons..." even if it's stolen it's just a bunch of words. To you it's a reminder to others it's gibberish. You'd have a list of the core of the stories so even after years you can remind yourself of the title and the notion of the story the missing can be made up as long as the core is there. You can even go as far as to make up a secret language that has keywords in order to be read only by you.
Especially the movies he had only seen once or twice—they left only a faint impression. Without some sort of prompt, he couldn't even remember them clearly.
