I wonder why he thinks being pregnant was the thing that put her in danger during the last campaign? While pregnancy is indeed dangerous, even today, I think the only reason Maxi survived at all when she emptied her mana to save Ethe Lene was because she had a child to take that death for her. Though that's not confirmed within the story it really seems like she went so far beyond the boundaries of her mana level that the only explanation was that she took her child's mana, too. Though it's probable that if she were to learn that was the case she would find it devastating, so it's probably best that no one has suggested it. Maybe if Riftan had ever bothered to ask her about her experience that day, he would be able to figure it out.

oh, is that the reason. DST screws us once again.

unlike the rest of the fandom, I'm really happy Maxi has friends around her to let her know that the way Riftan is treating her right now is NOT RIGHT and that she has other choices. Honestly at this point I just want her to drop the torch and become a Nornui mage; Riftan has a freaking lot to make up for, and hopefully we'll get some chapters soon of him at least making an attempt.
Seeing Maxi lost for words, Anette said with a deep sigh, "Just think about it. If you were to return to Nornui, you would be treated with respect while continuing your studies. Wouldn't it be a shame to miss such an opportunity over a cold stone statue of a man?"

FINALLY. I have a feeling the next chapter still won't contain any communication, though.

What principles has Miram demonstrated so far, though? So far the only "good" thing she's done is join this expedition but if she's secretly a dark mage they might have wanted her there as a spy and to help thwart the expedition.

It's not as if he's intentionally torturing here. I'm absolutely certain what he's displaying here is a guy who either thinks he's been dumped or is about to be. His lack of communication is because he's way too convinced that she's going to do a "we need to talk" that ends in him being single. Of course he doesn't want to have that conversation!
ch 267 Chapter 28
Fantasy · Suji Kim
I'm even more convinced that Riftan thinks she wants to break up and that's why he's cold and avoiding her. He wants to keep her from giving him the breakup speech until they're safe. New suspicion: Could Miriam have had something to do with the Ogres attacking Maxi? It seems weird that she's so universally hostile to Maxi, to the point that she didn't feel humbled and re-assess when she learned how Maxi had single-handedly turned the tide if the last war. And she's so quick to dismiss anyone finding it strange that Maxi was targeted. I thought she was just a bully but I'm starting to find her suspicious. Finally: Go, Anette! That is fantastic advice, and I suspect Maxi will try it out! She probably wouldn't have thought of it herself, but now that the idea is in there I doubt she can resist! For future reference and for people who don't have the countdown timer on their app, UTOT updated at 8PM CST on Sunday. I don't know the day the next update comes (I think it's Tuesday in my timezone), but I'm guessing it'll be at the same time on that day.

Darn it, my phone doesn't have that. maybe it's because I'm on an older phone? Or maybe it only works on Apple phones? Does it say how many hours away until the next update? Technically it's already Monday morning in Korea.

ch 266 Chapter 27
Fantasy · Suji Kim
I've been thinking about this chapter since, like every one else, I'm tortuously waiting for the next update. a lot of comments are saying that Riftand's attitude here is a reflection that he's still hurt and angry that she left. while those feelings are definitely there, I don't think that adequately explains his behavior to Maxi - that's too simplistic. Think about all the times Riftan has gotten angry at Maxi before. The first scene of the novel, he's angry because he thinks his wife's "refusal" to come to Anatol his her rejection of him, and her fearful attitude towards him in person seems to confirm it. Chapters later, he becomes enraged when he thinks she's asking for divorce. Later reasons for anger are about his insecurities that he can't properly protect and provide for her - the time she was almost hurt by invaders, his learning that she wants to become a mage - none of these things are ever about what she's done, not really: the are about Riftan's fear that he isn't good enough for her, that she'll leave him or get tired of him and run away. And one of the most recent scenes we have if Riftan before this moment is going to see his sister-in-law's child and feeling despair that perhaps he will never have a family again. All that knowledge should inform us on his inner thoughts during this scene. I think the reason he turns off his emotions is because this meeting is the equivalent of meeting an ex you're still in love with. He wants to kiss or scream at her, but he fears he doesn't have the right to do either anymore. This may seem like an unreasonable conclusion especially since she's written him letters while at Nornui, but the last time the two of thrm realy spoke together, he basically said that if she left for the tower that that was the end if thier relationship and she *left anyway*. He's had a lot of time to think about that incident in the interim. Maybe her leaving was her way of saying, "OK, let's break up." Maybe she has no intention of ever returning to Anatol. Maybe the "I miss you" messages didn't mean to Maxi what they mean for Riftan, and she was just expressing loneliness. Maybe, maybe, maybe. He's had three years for his insecurities to cause him to overthink everything and for those fears to get stronger and stronger. So this scene isn't about him trying to hurt her or express his rage over what she's done, it's trying to protect himself from their inevitable break-up, to keep it together long enough to protect her life and then watch her walk away. Because of his insecurities, he doesn't think about how he might seduce her back or convince her to stay, he doesn't realize how seductive he is as a man at all, despite the many women throwing themselves at him. His dumb broken brain just goes straight to "it's hopeless, how could someone as amazing as her decide to stay with me if she has a choice?"

Oof. I really worry about the younger fans of this series. I love the story, but I also have a happy marriage that was achieved only after years of first dating controlling men. I lived the life of, "let me put off all of my needs and slowly try to convince this volatile man to perhaps eventually listen to what I say." The central question for women putting themselves in Maxi's position is: your spouse locks you in the house and won't let you leave, and he also won't go to work because of a trauma you both experienced. How long do you live with this situation before you say, "I love you, but though I feel this sorrow with you, spending all day in bed is actually uncomfortable. I need to go back to work and take walks among the trees and talk to people other than you." For myself? I don't think I could stand my spouse acting like Riftan above a week. Maxi's been putting up with it for months now and you're suggesting that she spend a few more months in prison to convince him? No way.
Riftan had no qualms about destroying himself over anything concerning Maxi, while she was possessed by the perpetual temptation to cling to him and hide from the outside world. Left to continue, he would suffocate her, and she would drag his future through the mud. They would destroy each other in the name of love.

If this were him being honest, then I'd agree with you. If this was how he genuinely felt, then it would be correct for him to tell her before she goes. The problem I have with this scene is that he's lying. He's trying to manipulate her into staying. Which just shows all the more the toxic level thier relationship has reached that they absolutely NEED this break if they are to have any future. Maxi had it right in the last chapter: if they stay together and flee Anatol, they will destroy each other with this "love."
"Don't think for a minute that you're leaving for my sake," Riftan continued. "I never wanted this. You're leaving… for you."
Fantasy · Suji Kim
I disagree. Rifta has become increasingly unhealthy in regards to Maxi, and no amount of "talking" has made him understand what he's doing to both of them. If talking could convince him, then the argument they just had, where she said that if she ran away from Anatol with him she'd live the rest of her life feeling worthless and ashamed, would have been more than enough to get him to wake up. He *needs* this break from her as much as she needs to spread her wings and fly. And as much as he needs it he will never, ever be talked into it, not if you spoke to him for a year.

it's being released a chapter at a time, so it's not the completed book yet. I think we have about 70 chapters to go before we get the complete first book.

"Some might say as if he were trying to protect a six-year-old." Riftan's POV has entered the chat
"Sir Riftan seems to be irrationally protective of you. Some might say as if he were trying to protect a six-year-old," said the princess disapprovingly. "Of course, that wouldn't be a problem if you had no objection to it. But if that is not the case, you must make him see that you possess a will of your own."
Fantasy · Suji Kim
you're free to your opinion of course, but to me it's just boring. it's like in an anime when you're awaiting the big showdown but they keep having hot spring episodes.what I wish Maxi had been able to say to Riftan in the moment is "it sounds as if it is you who is not in love eith me, not the other way around. perhaps the girl you saw from afar was more gentle and gracious than I am, more obedient and clever. and now that you know me for who I am, you are disappointed if you wish to tell me that you do not love me, then tell it. or I enjoin you to think about it deeply, as you suggested I do."of course, Maxi can't put on that cold mask like Riftan can, so she probably wouldn't be able to pull that speech off. but something like that would be much less boring than what we got. at this point I wish Maxi would break up with Riftan and figure out her own way in the world. it's clear by now he'll never stop resenting her for not locking herself in their bedroom permanently.
