Yeah, Sunny received shadow shards from the guy he killed. If I remember correctly it's simply considered immoral and stupid as humans need to help each other survive in the dreams. And I also think Neph gained more shards because that guy had accumulated lots of shard compared to Sunny who gains fragment based on rank.
