Unfortunately, evening came without her chancing upon him again. Bone-weary, Maxi crawled into her bedroll. She briefly considered seeing Riftan but soon dismissed the idea, still embarrassed to face him. She feared that they would only end up arguing again. A part of her also hoped that he would seek her out first.

As if sensing her eyes on him, Riftan turned his head toward her. She froze as he leaped off his horse and strode over.

Riftan clenched his fist as a sense of helplessness washed over him. He would do anything to keep her far away from all the cruel, terrible things of this world. He hated the thought of her growing accustomed to the sight of corpses, and it pained him to watch her dutifully labor away without complaint. Nevertheless, the more he tried to protect her, the more she drove herself into danger.

Did he truly feel nothing for her? Even if he did not, the same could not be said for the princess. Maxi scowled, loathing herself for harboring such suspicions. Her head told her there was nothing to be worried about, but her insides still boiled whenever she saw them together.

Maxi rocked back and bit her lip. Riftan, having pried her knees apart, lowered himself between her legs and began kissing her most intimate part. She wrenched a fistful of clothes when his hot breath played over her sensitive folds. Her thighs tensed, and her back arched. White vapor puffed out of her mouth, rising up to the dark cave ceiling. Each time his tongue flicked her swollen nub, her spine melted from an almost painful pleasure.

She cut herself off when she saw a dangerous look flash across his face. He looked down at her grimly, then steered his horse around and descended the hill to join the Remdragon Knights. Devastated, she watched him trot away. Perhaps she would not have felt so miserable had he flown into a rage instead.

Some of the knights scowled at her rude tone, but Maxi raised her hand before they could say anything. She turned to follow Miriam to the church. At the top of the hill, mages were healing the wounded horses. Anette was already there, and she waved when she spotted them.

Maxi said a silent prayer. Enduring the cold was difficult enough without having to set up camp after a day on horseback. She tried to muster the dregs of her energy by imagining a blazing fireplace and a warm bed.
