I don't understand why you are all so mad he cut off the conversation. He answers her questions, he didn't lie and said the truth. He just decided, he didn't want to talk about it anymore. On top of that it's not the place to do it. They are in the middle of a monster's forest and the rain has stopped so they are moving. Plus, if he were to ask Maxi, she would have lie or change the subject. At least he talks even if it's just a little

She felt his tongue licking up the tears that had welled up in the corners of her eyes. His warm breath tickled her cheeks and lips, distracting her enough to stop weeping. He wound an arm around her waist and let out a deep sigh.
