If the King and Queen have two children, who each have a child of their own, those children are technically cousins and in the same line. We could debate that one of them is more "worthy" of the throne than the other, like for example looking at the current British monarchy, the order of the heirs would be First son of the Queen (Charles), First son of that son (William) and then the children of that son Before his own brother (Henry) and way before the Second son of the Queen. But I guess that if you look at a fallen empire, royal blood is royal blood and theirs would have the same level of "purity".
Arian died without giving birth to a male heir. Repeated cycles of pregnancy and miscarriage had drained the life out of her. And the duke, who needed an heir carrying the royal blood of the Roemian imperial family, wasted no time in marrying one of Arian's cousins.

Same. And I think that even if his POV is happening prior to all of this, it's a really natural transition from the heart-crushing ending of Book 1, as if he was himself looking back on it. Reading this book first just makes Riftan's POV much more important and emotional.

I think I can safely say that you can always interpret Riftan's threathening stares as 1- Incredibly scared of her rejection or 2- Ridiculously aroused by her simple presence, depending on context and it's just always spot on.
A threatening glint flashed across his eyes. He relaxed again only when Maxi vigorously shook her head.

He then scooped her into his arms, blanket and all, and sat down on the bed. Ignoring Maxi's flailing legs, he placed her on his knees and cupped her face with his hands. She felt his tongue licking up the tears that had welled up in the corners of her eyes. His warm breath tickled her cheeks and lips, distracting her enough to stop weeping. He wound an arm around her waist and let out a deep sigh.
